Hi!

I'm getting an H100 to pair up with my i7 960 (3.2GHz) hoping to get an overclock to 3.8-4GHz. My motherboard is an ASUS Rampage III Extreme.

So does anyone have experience overclocking the 960 or have any ideas of what sounds reasonable/safe?

Typing on my phone so I'm keeping it short.

Thanks in advance!

4ghz isnt really hard on a 960. Take a look at some tutoriel about bloomfield OC and your good to go.

I don't have an i7 960 but have a 920 (D0) on a rampage II extreme. 4Ghz is should be doable but like stated above every chip clocks differently. You might be able to go above 4.0 but its hard to say until you start testing it.

I would start out and set your multiplier to 21 and BLK to 190 at 1.28-1.30v and stress test it for a while!

Thanks for the replies, I'll post info in this thread when I get the H100 and start testing.

You shouldnt have any issue hitting 4ghz especially with a good cooler. Some people have had better luck using odd multipliers so think about that. You dont have to use your max multi when you overclock. 20x210 was always magical for my i7-920 though.

What motherboard are you pairing it with as well as RAM?

As stated in my first post it's a ASUS Rampage III Extreme, also gonna mix it with 24gigs Corsair Dominator RAM (6x4)

The model number is "CMP12GX3M3A1600C9"

Eeek sorry, I read the OP twice and missed it sorry. Yeah, 4ghz shouldnt be an issue whatsoever. Id shoot for a 200mhz bclock personally and go from there. With that much ram, you will probably need a little bit higher QPI voltage than most. Probably around 1.3v.

Overclocking 6 sticks of 4gb RAM is going to place some stress on the IMC of your 1st gen i7 CPU... which were not known for having the strongest IMC. I would suggest running one 3x4gb kit at first while attempting to learn the overclocking characteristics of your individual chip before moving on and installing the second kit.

4.0ghz on a 960 should be a piece of cake. And everybody loves cake.

A quick search will give you a rough idea of what you can expect to have to deal with for voltages and such. Quick and dirty way to get to 4ghz is to just google the mobo CPU combo you have and throw it in, although it may not work for you. Every batch is different, every chip can be different.
