ZL1 asked me to post some benchmarks on my FX-8350/5850 combo so we can compare our cards. I ran Heaven basic and extreme as well as 3d Mark 11 "performance" and 3d Mark Vantage p. Everything was run at 4.7 cpu and 1000/1145 on the 5850.

lol :) didnt think ud start a thread, but ya lets make this comparison public, I think it could be helpful to others
idea was to compare i5 vs amd in 3d with the same gpu :)

some of mine:
heaven b: http://hwbot.org/submission/2354353...basic_preset_radeon_hd_5850_2582.95_dx9_marks

11: http://hwbot.org/submission/2352121_zl1_3dmark11___performance_radeon_hd_5850_5177_marks

vantage: http://hwbot.org/submission/2354371_zl1_3dmark_vantage___performance_radeon_hd_5850_22631_marks

personally I like what the amd is doing in 3d
granted, its 8 core, but pricewise his setup is still cheaper !!

another vantage run at roughly 5.2 cpu same gpu clocks. I figure we can compare cpu clock for clock.

Not necessarily true. From what a bunch of us have found the 8xxx series Cpu's really need a lot of power to the cpu, if you are planning on overclocking. That said most budget to second tier motherboards do not supply enough juice to power it for big overclocks. I had a M5A99X Evo under this chip previously 6+2 power phases and I couldn't get it stable above 4.5. With my CHV I have been able to get it 2 hours primed at 5.1 and benched it as high as 5.5. I may be mistaken but I don't think that overclocking a I5 2500/3570k or I7 2600/3770k require as expensive of a board in order to overclock it to big numbers? So far I have my I5-2500k stable on air at 4.7 on a Asrock Extreme 4 no way I could do that with the 8350 on a board at that price range.

I have a 5850, but it's not in my main rig. When I finally get around to benching it, though, I will post up some information. I killed one 5850 a while ago that I put under DIce. It ran pretty well even with a 54x SB chip.

dont really wanna get into arguing :) but-
1 most of us run a psu around 650 or higher anyway
2 most of us buy an expensive mobo anyway
but you can get a decent OC with a $100 mobo on amd and intel alike (gigabyte 970ud3 for ex and trust me it will oc an fx)
or go higher up, the 990fxa-ud3 is same price as the z77x-ud3
4 the cpu will be the only difference and will cost rather differently
I tried to compare so I can see for myself more than anything, if amd can compete

ya, love this card tbh, I dont know how I will let go of it, maybe if I get a 7850-7870 ;)

Couple of replaced caps a few solders and some oven lovin'...

It still has issues but it is definitely still servicable as an htpc card.

Wow, I thought that card was dead for good. I didn't even know some of the caps were bad. I swear I stared at that card forever and couldn't find any bad parts.

Funny thing is I didn't either, at first. I then showed it to my friend(electrical engineer) and he pointed out a few anomalies on the back of the card. I replaced the respective caps, baked it and viola it was up and running again.

It does have some minor quirks but as I said its perfectly fine for my htpc.

+1 I will have a hard time dealing with the death of my 5850 if and when that time comes. It was my first decent Gpu purchase.

I also re ran Heaven so I could submit them on HWBot I didn't change any settings and my scores were 2524.4 vs 2450 on basic and 808.6 vs 768.7 on extreme, Is this normal?

The shader count can't be be increased with a BIOS flash.

These cards are the same as the day I received them, stock cooling and all.

I was wondering because on 69xx cards, shaders do unlock with a bios flash. I'm just wondering how you know they are 5870 bios. I know that 5870 have different core and mem speeds, but the cards might just have an OC 5850 Bios. I'm not 100% on this, but I don't think you can flash 5870 Bios to a 5850 even if the 5850 can stably run the 5870 speeds.

That is true on the 69xx cards but it doesn't work for the 58xx.

Heres a link to the 5870 BIOS, you can compare it to the GPUZ SS.
