Long time no see, just wanted to share with you guys my latest project that I'm working on. I've been searching for a somewhat decently priced Dell Poweredge for a while so that I could have a nice ESXi host as well as home media server etc. I've been impressed with the poweredge servers after helping a buddy of mine install a 1950 in his home server rack and helped to wire his house. So finally I was able to get my hands on a decently priced 2950 gIII with 6x 250gb sata drives off I drove down to Illinois to pick it up in person, coolest part is, it even has a warranty through the refurbishing company through the end of the year (servermonkey). First things first it was missing a DRAC off to ebay I went and scooped up a DRAC5 for it with cables as well as a PERC6i w/battery to replace the SATA/SAS controller card. Got those in and tested out the raid functions found I was able to do Raid 50 so I settled on that for now, not sure I'm going to stick with that or not if anyone has anything to suggest I'm all ears.
Server Goals:
This leads me to the next portion of this Project, currently I use two Linksys WRT320n's modded to run DD-WRT one is in my office that provides a switch for my home PC's as well as the connection point for my Motorola DOCSIS3 cable modem and the other is in our TV room providing whole house WIFI coverage as well as wired connections for our HDTV, PS3, and WD TV Live Hub. Now as fascinating as I find DD-WRT to play with that all I really find a use for it. Fast forward to today and I have a Cisco 1812 along with a Cisco 3550-12t (12 Gigabit Ports with 2xgigabic's installed) what I plan to do is wire up the living room, and the other two bedrooms and provide them with a connection to this switch and convert my network over so it's behind the Cisco and using VLAN's for my wireless, wired, voip and some other odd's and ends put to use all the things I do in my day to day at work. It is with this idea in mind that I set about looking for a Server Cabinet, I lucked out and found a guy at work willing to part ways with a Sun Microsystems Server Cabinet cheap, so off I rented a U-Haul, bribed a buddy and came home with a shiny new purple/gray ish full height cabinet. After playing hercules, we finally got it into the basement where it's currently waiting for me to get started on this project fully.
At this point I can't decide to keep the built in power distribution built into the base of this, if anyone has some input on whether it's worth it to keep this I'd be willing to entertain the notion of getting an electrician out because currently it's not set up to just plug right in to 110v. If there is no benefit to keeping this I'm not opposed to ripping it out and starting from scratch.
Network Goals:
Pictures to come for you guys in the next day or so

Server Goals:
Replace the 250gb drives with 3tb WD Redscompleted w/addition of a PERC H700- Install ESXi and build some VM's
- Create a Media Partition with the bulk of the space going to that function
- Rack the server into a server cabinet and obtain a UPS

Network Goals:
- Replace the Linksys Router with a Cisco 1812 (also looking at a 3825)
- Move the network over to the 3550-12t catalyst and create VLANs
- Configure QOS for the VOIP service to ensure phone calls get priority
- Begin to build out a CCNA/CCNP lab and document it as I go
Pictures to come for you guys in the next day or so
