I am making my current rig a server. It has 4 HDD: 1x 70gb raptor, 2x 1tb drives, and 1x 500gb drive. I want to make the 500 gb drive where WHS runs but when I boot from the WHS disk, it says that one of the 1TB drives is primary and I can only choose a primary drive. How do I make the 500gb drive primary so I can install WHS on it?

Am I over thinking this? do I just disconnect the other drives?

Actually it turns out that pulling the cables on the other drives is exactly what you do. Hurrr durrrr. Can one of our great mods please delete this thread. Thank you !!!

Since you figured out the problem you were having, we don't want to delete the thread. If someone else has the same issue, they know how to resolve it. Glad it was something simple. :)

I had to do this also, but it's kind of my standard practice for new machines anyway. I also ran into the 160GB drive size requirement (wanted to put a 128 SSD for the OS.) Had to toss in a 256GB instead. There's some steps to go through to just bypass it, but I didn't want to go through that mess.

I didn't see any need for a SSD in the server. It is going to be doing some basic media sharing hopefully and that is about it. I have a menagerie of hard drives in that old beast but it keeps on trucking. I am sure it will be speed limited by my network. I have an old 74gb raptor but it is too small to be the main drive.

I also found out that if you have stuff on the drives you can not access it through WHS 2011 or through the dashboard. At least not without some add-in stuff or something. So if your hard drives are all full of junk, you are going to lose that stuff. Luckily I was able to pull drives out and transfer the imporntant files to my PC. I can reformat or cleanup within WHS 2011 I think so we will see how it goes.

Also the console will not install on your pc if you have some program that installed poorly. I had to do a registry tweak to knock that out so I could get it to install on my pc.

My next trick will be getting it to work with my Dune media player.

I put the SSD because I can also use it as a secondary gaming machine for the kids. Since it is essentially Windows 7, it runs everything so far.

Are you using Windows Home Server 2011 or Windows 7?

I can't figure out how to add a graphics driver for WHS 2011, I can barely use explorer because every website gives me pop up warnings every 1 second when I am using the machine. I am going to try formatting the drives tonight using power shell.
