I am running Win98 with IE 5.5.

I have always installed most of the updates available on
the Microshaft windows update page, except for the
update notification, and other junk that is going to contact
MS when I am not looking.

Yesterday I applied an update that showed up there a couple
of days ago that allegedly is supposed to plug up another
security hole.

It seems to have disabled TweakUI's ability to hide/change the
arrows on shortcut icons.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled 2 different versions of tweakUI,
but this function fails to work for either. It seems to try, redraws
all the icons, and the shortcuts all come back with the big arrow.

The tweakmeup item is still loading at startup. Dont know if
any more functions have been disabled or not yet.

Unless somebody has a fix, looks like I will be reinstalling
windows, and skipping any updates that were released
in 2002.

MicroSoft is the devil.

1) Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and move to the second alphabetic section of entries to find the subkey lnkfile.

When you select lnkfile, the data in the right-hand pane appears. Select the entry IsShortcut.

2) Press F2 to change the name of the entry, and enter any letter in place of the initial letter I. Press Enter to complete the edit of the entry name.

3)Reboot, and when your desktop reappears, all those little arrows will be gone.

Ff you can't find it (I'm not sure if the orientation of folders is the same from 98 to XP) just do a search on "IsShortcut" and you'll be able to easily get to it.

If your looking for the ability to tweak your settings and 'tweakui" fails to work anymore....you can DL a program called 'Xteq X-setup"....will allow you to tweak a ton more settings and you can add more by Dling pluggins...it's an awesome tool...and it's freeware!

Thanks.

I tried changing those ISShortcut entries, but to no avail.

Luckily, my new HDD got here yesterday, so I now am running
a fresh w98 install will all the critical/security updates except
for that last one dated 3-7-2002, and all looks OK.

I wonder if anyone else has had a problem with that patch.... ?
