I've had my 4870 for nearly 5 years or so, i can say it served me well. Up until today i can play all the games with it. And i did pay 300Euro for it. So i think you might be right, getting a better card now and the rest later.
As for gaming, i don't really play more than 2-3 games. Grim Dawn isn't too heavy, runs very well even with my old 64x2 athlon system (35fps). Aion is heavy and gets stupidly heavier in Siege (500 people on your screen), and yea my 4870 starts having problems in huge siege battles (only there), in any other occasion my fps doesnt go below 40. That's the main reason i wanted an upgrade, maybe a little more graphics power while (if possible) decreasing or maintaining wattage usage.
As for my i7 920, im not too sure if an upgrade is worthy right now. The hasswell cpu's were not much of an upgrade, my friend is playing aion in 4770k and we have similar frame rates (his gpu is a little bit better). He told me that he regrets the upgrade from his older first get 940, he should have waited for the new 2014-15 intel cpu's (his words). So i think my 920 is still ok, for at least another year or 2. Basically i ll wait for ddr4 lol, that's the only worthwhile upgrade imo.
I might have considered a platform upgrade if the i7 920 was starting to show it's age, but for all the applications that i use i still think it's ultra fast. I do some video recording and editing with sony vegas and it doesnt have any problems.
PS: If i get the 270x or the gtx 760 will i have any problems with my PSU? Im using a 550 watt (bronze) corsair PSU. As far as i know my 4870 draws 150 watts at max usage..
