Hi, I'm ready for a gfx card upgrade and have set my mind on a r9 290, but would my psu ( Antec HCG 620w ) be upto the job with overclocked cpu?
Thanks.

Nope, not with that current psu. The R9 290 is one powerful card. You're going to need a minimum of 750w to feed it. I suggest an EVGA SuperNova 750w.

Ok , right that's thrown a spanner in the works. What if i dropped the cpu back to stock for now would that help?
Just till i can muster up enough money for new psu.

Hi , Just checked spec and its 48A on +12v Rail
so that would be ok till i get a new psu.

Yep. 48A*12v gives 576w.

200w for the CPU oc'ed. 320/330w for the gpu oc'ed and you have like 50 left for the mobo/hdd and side. You dhoul be fine keeping in mind that it's not likely that you'll have both CPU and gpu on full load together.

I agree with Manu, you shouldn't have an issue running it with that Psu. I believe that is a Seasonic unit so it should be fine. Just do not try and push the Oc's on both the Cpu and Gpu and run both at 100%.

I won't be overclocking gpu anyway and probably run the 8320 @ 4.0ghz for now.
Thanks.

50w is cutting it kinda close don't you think? But hey who am I to say...
Yes, but when is the system going to be operating at 100% on both the Cpu and Gpu.

If it starts to reboot randomly, you'll know why. Good luck!
This is true and I had the same issue with a 650w Seasonic X-Series, powering my Fx 8350 and GTX 580 lightning. Though it was only when running 3D benchmarks with the Cpu over 5.2 and the Gpu OC'ed to it's max.

I was running a [email protected]/1.4v and a 7970@1200/1800/1.35v on a bequiet 500w(430w on the 12v rail).

As soon as I was pushing the OC above 3.8, the psu was shutting down, but it was a 430w... so, they should not be any issue with your setup.

As Neb says, if it shuts down randomly, the psu would be the culprit, but I doubt it...

I have an i7 4790k and an r9 290 running right now with a 550w PSU (see sig). Working just fine for BF3/4.

Unfortunately, Ninja the Fx 8320 draws a lot more power then the 4790k, you can't really compare the two.

I'd run it. I've benched a 8320 @ 5.3 and a 580 on a 600w unit without issue. Many many times.

I was Benching a LGA 1366 i7 930 and GTX 580 Lightnings (SLI) with a 800watt Rosewill PSU, I heard a loud "POP" and my rig shut down. After that I bought brand names and 1000- 1300watt PSU LOOL

brand names, check. 1000w+ just cause, no check. Rosewill killed you, not the wattage

1000w+ just cause, check. I put the 580 Lightnings in my 3930K and I would shut down the rig at 5.0GHz with a 1000mhz on the core of the GPU's hence Antec 1200 HCP :)
