Hi, I bought a Intel I7 4790K. It's clocked at 4GHZ and boost at 4.4GHZ. About 20 minutes after running Prime 95 the temperatures get up into the 95C. Is this normal? I'm using a NZXT X60 liquid cooler (set to extreme mode). I tried to redo the thermal past but no luck. I'm using Nocutua NT-H1 thermal paste which I read was really good. The Core Voltage is 1.249V. Do you have any idea of what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

Check the mount of the CPU block. Mount it with TIM. Run it hot for a little while and take the block off. The CPU and block should both be covered almost equally with TIM. There should be no holes or gaps with no TIM. Make sure you don't use too much TIM. Maybe a little less than pea size right in the middle.

You can check your mount as suggested, but I'm seeing similar temps with my "4790k". Intel has essentially overclocked these by default to almost the max of the average haswell i7, so they're gonna run hot. Prime95 isn't typical usage either. In BF4, for example, I'm only hitting 50ish, which I'm fine with.

I'm using a True 140, btw, with MX-4 (or 2? Can't remember lol).

No way should it hit 95c at stock speeds if the cooler is mounted correctly unless you use the stock cooler and even then, that shouldn't happen.

This isn't at stock, but it's pretty close to it. Maybe we're both doing something wrong?

You said 4400, so I assumed stock, but that's still way too hot for a 100MHz o/c even with the stock cooler, yet alone water. You don't have the best watercooling system, but anything is better than the cooler that comes with the CPU and even with that, those temps are way too high. Make sure your block is mounted correctly, the pump is working correctly, and there are no kinks in the tubing.

I think you're mixing up my setup with the OP's, but no matter.

I looked up the temperature issue and found several mentions of Prime95 causing 95C+ with the 4790k. Must be something about the architecture and that particular test.

I didn't get that far yet, but is there a better test to use for stressing Haswell chips during OC?

Linx may run even warmer. I've seen instances where it does run warmer than Prime and instances when it runs cooler. You can try Handbrake, but you need a video to convert. You can try OCCT, but that uses IBT I think, which is like Linx.

I was under that same impression before, but what I'm reading is that others as seeing temps in the 70s with IBT, but Prime temps in the 90s with the 4790k.

Newest version of prime cooks Intel's. I have no.idea about Linx as I stopped.using it almost after it came out (overkill).

That said, the mraken x60 is a solid cooler. I own one. It can keep a 4930k cool at 4.4ghz... It can cool a 4790k with ease. Those temps seem hot. What is your ambient temp?

Sounds like stock settings but
This doesn't look like stock voltage to me.

Possible need for a BIOS flash? What motherboard is it running on.

Hi, I'm using a Gigabyte Gaming GT Z97 with the latest BIOS (F5). Do you know what the correct voltage should be?

It could be Anantech's review about the 4790 says this:

"Our i7-4790K sample actually had a high stock voltage – 1.273 volts at load."

My 4960 is the same. It hits 1.35v at load on auto. I manually set it to 1.225. This is the lowest I can go and pass Prime. It still fails Linx unless I let it run at 1.35.

Wow I didn't realize the stock VID was that high.

You may be able to lower it and see if it's still stable.

Probably could lower it onthe 4690k, but the 4790k is basically a 4770k overclocked to 4.4, so it probably needs the extra juice.

4ghz... Turbo is to 4.4 on single core... But I hear ya!

I have seen VID values that high on these chips (by VID I mean stock voltage since that is what VID means). :)

I thought the new thermal paste that Intel is using on the 4790K would keep the temperatures down more but I guess that's not the case.

I'd still check the mount. The temps are too high.

When you say check the mount do you mean check the CPU and Heatsink? I already applied new paste twice and still no luck. I used Noctua NT-H1.

I'm happy at stock speed. I have a pretty good GPU that I used in gaming. Everything else runs fine at 4 GHz and 4.4 Ghz turbo boost.
