Hi Everyone,

I just bought a retail Radeon 9800 Pro for my old G4 (don't say it - I just like the old machines :D), and want to eventually get a VGA cooler, since of course the 9800 fan runs LOUD. Anyway I've looked around here for ideas on which one, but haven't found too much. Does anyone know of a list of the most current coolers that work on the 9800 Pro? I know it's an old card, but there must be some good ones still out there. Thanx muchly!!

ATI changed their cooler mounting section around the x850-series cards, so most new coolers will not work on a card that old.

You're going to have to look for an older style cooler like a Zalman ZM-VF900-Cu or Thermalright V1 (powerful for the era, but IIRC it was a nightmare to install). Unfortunately anything out of production like that is going to run you $30-$40+, well beyond the value of such a card these days. Good luck.

Try these:

Thanks for the suggestions. One other question: are chip heatsinks usually necessary? I know some coolers have them, some don't. The ATI Silencer 4 has a copper base for cooling the chips, but it doesn't work with the 9800.

If the stock cooler covers something, plan to stick heatsinks on it.
If there's no heatsinks on the VRAM by default then you can probably go without.

I cracked the core on my 9800 Pro putting on an Arctic Cooling heatsink and I
followed the instructions to the letter.

I destroyed an x850pro like that. V1 Ultra was very, very difficult to make level, and I found that out the hard way. Fortunately ATI was nice enough to send me a new card even though they probably shouldn't have.

And that happened back when video cards were cheap ($240 to $250 for a top tier video card).
Back then I vowed I'd never buy another aftermarket cooler for a video card ever again, but I did
anyway.
