Shopping for a new video card :)

I haven't been keeping myself up to date on recent computer hardware changes and it looks like there have been quite a few (again). My wife wants to get me a new video card for Christmas but I am at a complete loss as to what to get. It's going to be for gaming of course and I do realize my current rig is getting long in the tooth. What's a good video card for a price range of $200 to $250 Canadian to go in my current chassis? I'm guessing a GTX 760 or maybe an R9 280 from what I've viewed on Newegg? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.....

I want to mention that both cards are actually from last gen, and just re-badged architectures. Doesn't mean much as a practical matter, but it's kinda funny to me.
