Hello:

I'm helping out a buddy with his computer. This rig needs a fresh install of Windows because it's been years (he is using XP) and it barley moves with all the crap on it. I told him I'd help him out.

He has a ASUS P5N-E SLI mobo. I have an old copy of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit I'm giving him since I'm using Windows 8.1 now. I'm also giving him a used SanDisk Extreme 120GB SSD that I'm not using to try and add some pep to his rig.

I've been trying to load the Win 7 CD and all its doing is booting off the CD to what seems like a desk top. Never once asking me to load windows like it normally does. I reformatted the SSD prior to the install attempt. What is going on? I am lost.

One of his DVD units is an Master IDE and the other is a SATA. Trying to list everything that could be causing this issue.

Also, The BIO'S does it say ACHI for the SSD anyware.

Any ideas what the heck going on or I'm doing wrong?

Try disconnecting all drives except for the ssd, and dvd unit you are trying to boot from. You might need to change to the boot order, to the dvd for the install.

Try cleaning the install disc. It may also be scratched up, too. Dvd player may not be able to read the disc. Are you able to create an .iso from that disc? If you can, then you can use rufus, http://rufus.akeo.ie/ to make a bootable usb drive. Another alternative is to find a legit MS .iso of you os. You can get it from here, http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/. I don't know if that board supports a boot from a usb drive though.

It looks like it's reading the disk all right. When I boot from the DVD player these three screen shots are what I get. Never once does it ask me to install windows.

That's it. Never had this issue before. I reformatted the SSD I wanted to use and it did the above. Then I took and reformatted the 500GB HHD that it was originally in the machine and got the same result. I'm quite sure the CD is fine. Any other ideas?

Try grabbing an .iso from the link I gave you and burn it to a dvd or usb drive. Make sure it's the correct version. Your issue could be the media, or the dvd drive. I'm leaning towards the media. Do you have a usb that you can use for the install?

I'm wondering if the native W7 drivers might not work for that board.

What bios version is that board?

I have two cd's of win 7 Pro. I'll look into these options tomorrow morning. Done for the evening

You say you reformatted the SSD. Did you check in Disk Management to be sure that it has an active primary partition?

Yes. I used a different DVD unit and a different CD I have with WIN 7 pro. I now have it loaded. I now have a different issue.

I went online to activate the version of windows I have which is the student version and it's giving me this.

This see below: I'm starting to get irritated.

Good article. Thanks for that.

This whole ordeal was a new experience for me. Never seen these issue before. I ended up calling MS. They activated my copy of windows for me with now problems. I'm glad they did because this was really becoming annoying.

Any how thanks to the great members of this forum for all the help. This is the best group of folks always willing to help thank you.

I have one more computer to activate and I'm good to go.
