Restarting Win7 in safe mode

I have to run a spyware scan in safe mode. Problem is, spamming F8 during boot on my machine brings up my boot selection menu, not the safe mode prompt. How do I, from within Win7, tell the computer to reboot into safe mode? Someone explained it to me already but I didn't understand.

You wait to hit F8 till after the BIOS has initiated.

start -> run -> MSCONFIG
Then you can tell it to bring up the boot choices menu.
