i am importing a lot of video from a digital camcorder to my PC. what's the best program to edit the videos? i've just been using windows movie maker but i am starting to think i shouldnt. seems to me that it converts the .avi file into a movie maker file first. then i can edit and then save back but as an mp4 file. seems like a lot of unnecessary decoding and encoding to me. am i thinking about that right? is there a way to just edit the original avi file?

The two I always hear spoken of highly are Sony Vegas Pro & Adobe Premiere Pro. Of course, they aren't exactly cheap, but you asked for the best. :)
