Optical Audio cable

Running an older Logitech 5.1 speaker system. Using the 3 colored plugs to go from mobo to the controller.
Just found a BNIB digital audio fiber optic cable, would I get better sound quality using this optical cable?

Yes, if your amplifier/receiver supports it.

Yes, provided the receiver has a better DAC than the one built into the motherboard. It probably does.

I plugged it in and did not see much difference. It may well be the asus on board software which i did not really know what I was doing adjusting.
But changed to DTS and 5.1 setting. It sounds about the same as with original cables. Not a big deal for me. But expected a noticeable change in
quality. Running the new rampage 5 and Logitech Z680 speakers btw.

Meh. Speakers will do that, but optical is a better signal than what you had, period.
