But I looked at some pictures and sizes and saw that the Asus card was only wider not longer and has the same positioning

That doesn't mean the screw holes didn't move slightly without you being able to tell.

Custom reference waterblocks don't fit the Ares.
Also, the Ares is a 7970X2, not a 7990.

Do you think I still should try mounting it since my friend is giving me the cooler for free because he replaced it with a different watercooler?
