My rig is almost complete, The last thing I really need is the GPU
I'd prefer to stay AMD because I have and amd processor.

But I am open to all suggestions.

I also wonder if it would be better to get 1 good one
or run 2 at the same time?

Suggestions please :)

you might want to look at the gtx970, micro center has a good one on sale each week for around $330-340.
these are the results so far for our little clocking club, for single cards.
get the best single card you can fit in the budget, a second card will never add %100 to your performance, meaning my dual 760's will never out perform a single 770 nor will my dual 280x setup out perform a single 290x.
this is not a hard rule but will apply to most cards.

I guess now what it boils down too is brand or performance.
I know I either want a GTX980 or an r9 290.
How would I go about finally picking the brand?
I want almost the best performance I can get really, for under 1k

Then if you have the budget, buy a 980.
It's faster than the 290 by far.

(and this comes from a 290X owner)

So right now I have the MSI GTX 980 GAMING 4G GeForce GTX 980 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support G-SYNC Support Video Card in my mind as the top right now? is that good or is there something that will be more compatible with my mobo?

It's good. They are all compatible with your motherboard.

And for the record, an amd flu with amd gpu does.t have to be. There are no benefits of that kind of association. :)

I know they are all compatible I just heard you would run into less potential problems if you match up. But if that's not really the case that's even better. There are so many to choose from

If you happen to have lower-than-refresh-rate in games, you will notice it with an AMD Radeon...
If you have lower-than-refresh-rate in games with Nvidia, it'll be butter smooth still.

I switched to Radeon because of mining. before that my 550ti was smooth as butter even though I wasn't getting 60 FPS. More like 40.

For comparison:
I run Minecraft at about 45 - 70 FPS. I can feel and notice when my FPS dips below 55 FPS.
While my brother has my old 550ti and a dual core Haswell Pentium, he gets a mere 30 FPS, 50 on a good day, and yet it's always smooth - even at 30 FPS.
Somehow, my much more powerful rig is "struggling" to keep smooth gameplay. Can't be CPU, since I get 400+FPS without mods. The difference is the GPU.

This is why I'm going for a GTX 960 - it's a upgrade from my 270x plus I get that butter smooth Nvidia :)
