I think I've managed to track this down to a potential motherboard issue, but I've got no idea where to go to solve it.
I'm currently trying to install Zorin 9, but I'm also getting the same behavior out of Ubuntu 14.04.
I start the install, and it seems to go OK, until I hit this screen:
None of the tabs will do anything when clicked on. If I click "Install Now" I get an error message that tells me I need to fix something in the partition table.
I suspect that for some reason the motherboard isn't reporting the status of the hard drive correctly.
However I can see and manipulate the hard drive with fdisk and gparted.
I'm willing to try just about anything at this point.
Edit: Solved
sudo apt-get remove dmraid
Figures, right after I post this I found the right answer.
