Announcing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 14356
By Dona Sarkar / Software Engineer, Windows and Devices Group

Earlier today, I tweeted about going and hustling the build team about getting a new build as soon as possible. I am excited to report that we have released Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 14356 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. This build has a good set of fixes I think Insiders will enjoy!

Here’s what’s new in Build 14356

Cortana Improvements

Get notifications from your phone to your PC: Cortana will now surface your phone notifications and critical alerts, including messages from messaging services, SMS or social media as well as missed calls from any Windows 10 phone or Android device to your PC, so you never miss a beat while staying focused on your PC.

NOTE: Android requires Cortana version 1.7.1 or higher. (download here for U.S. and download here for China) Some actions on Cortana forward notifications may not be fully functional yet, including reply from PC (for Windows 10 Mobile). Muting the forwarded Windows 10 Mobile notifications per app will come soon. In the meantime, if you want to stop receiving phone notifications, go to Cortana settings and toggle off “Send notifications between devices”.

Send a photo from your phone to PC: If you need to quickly transfer a photo from your phone to your PC wirelessly – just ask Cortana “send this photo to my PC” and see what happens. This feature is currently exclusive to Windows 10 phones.

New listening animation: When you tap the mic icon in Cortana, there is a new animation that shows Cortana is listening to you as you speak.

Here’s what’s fixed for Mobile

**We fixed an issue that was resulting in high battery usage when using the Microsoft Health app.
**We fixed an issue where the 75-85% battery icon was not very accurate, and made it look like you had more battery left than you actually did.
**We updated the UI for rearranging Quick Actions in the Settings app to now show a visual confirmation of readiness on press and hold, and to show the other Quick Actions reflowing while you’re dragging the Quick Action to its new spot.
**The Settings app will no longer crash when you are re-arranging Quick Actions resulting in the loss of Quick Action slots.
**We fixed an issue that caused the Brightness Quick Action to appear missing.
**We updated thumbnail generation logic to now only create the small thumbnail automatically after taking a picture, and create a larger thumbnail on demand. This saves SD card space for people who take a very large number of photos.
**We have made improvements to the Glance screen. We fixed an issue that resulted in the Glance screen clock occasionally not being up to date. The Glance screen will now “Always show Glance screen when charging” as the default behavior. And we fixed an issue resulting in Glace screen possibly showing an unexpected and extremely large badge count.
**We fixed an issue where the Alarms & Clock app might not update corresponding to a time zone change, resulting in an alarm going off at the wrong time.
**We fixed an issue where the Camera app wouldn’t launch from the hardware key for certain devices if the Flashlight Quick Action was active.
**We decreased the size of icons used in notifications from 64×64 to 48×48 – maintaining the visibility, while improving the use of space in the Action Center.
**We fixed an issue where the solid black rectangle of the keyboard could sometimes be seen for a second after entering your pin on the Lock screen to unlock your device.
**We fixed a few issues causing the keyboard not to come up with various UWP apps like the Messaging app, Microsoft Edge, and Cortana.
**We fixed an issue where diversity emoji might show up as two characters (emoji and diversity modifier) in certain apps, including Messaging.
**We updated backup logic to also include Start tile transparency percent, so that backups created from Build 14356 onwards will restore preferred transparency.
**We fixed an issue that resulted in PCs failing to connect to the phone’s mobile hotspot with the error “Can’t set up network”.
**We have updated app names on Live tiles to now reflect Ease of Access’ Text Scaling setting.
**We fixed an issue resulting in the Brightness Quick Action not doing anything on certain devices after setting brightness to “automatic” in the Settings app.
**We fixed an issue that resulted in Groove crashing when swiping to open the hamburger menu.
**We fixed an issue that resulted in the Settings app sometimes freezing for a bit when moving a very large number of apps to a SD card.
**We fixed an issue that resulted in Continuum having extremely fast scrolling inertia with certain TVs.
**Fixed an issue where Glance screen might show stale badge counters for a few seconds immediately after Glance appeared
**We have updated the Mobile Hotspot settings page to give clearer error messaging when setting up a hotspot fails due to no SIM being connected.
**We fixed an issue that could result in Reminders not showing up at the correct time after upgrading.
**We fixed an issue that would result in Cortana not showing any results if you started the mic and didn’t say anything, and then typed out the query.
**We improved the reliability of Cortana listening after tapping the mic button.
**We improved the refresh time of Wi-Fi data usage breakdown under Settings > Network and wireless > Data usage so it will more quickly update to reflect your usage when you open the page.
**We fixed an issue where the navigation bar buttons for certain devices might be mapped incorrectly when the phone was locked leading to press and hold on back button invoking one-handed mode, and press and hold on Windows button invoking search.
**We fixed an issue that resulted in not being able to turn off Bluetooth above the Lock screen without entering your pin.
**We fixed an issue where certain apps, such as WhatsApp, were not displaying a detailed status on the Lock screen.
**We fixed an issue where certain games developed for Windows Phone 8.1 might not scale correctly after the navigation bar had been hidden and would result in a black bar at the bottom of the screen on devices like the Lumia 535.

Known issues for Mobile

**We are continuing to investigate battery life issues impacting certain devices. We have fixed a few bugs that improve battery life but we have more work to do here.
**We are investigating data issues with some Dual-SIM devices where cellular data doesn’t work correctly with a second SIM. Several issues relating to cellular data with Dual-SIM devices have been reported by Insiders with the last two Mobile builds and we’re investigating these reports.
**In some cases, the new Cortana features highlighted above may not work. Restarting your phone should fix the issue and get the features working.
**After installing this build, you may notice your Quick Actions icons are not in the same order. This is a side effect of the fixes/changes we made to Action Center. To re-arrange your icons to your preferred order, just go to Settings > System > Notifications & actions > (Quick actions) and touch, hold, and then drag to re-arrange icons to whatever position you want. Remember: the four items in the top row are what will show as your immediately viewable Quick Actions.

I look forward to getting many more builds out to Windows Insiders!

Thanks,
Dona

Preview Build 14361

June 8, 2016 10:01 am
Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14361
By Dona Sarkar / Software Engineer, Windows and Devices Group

Hello Windows Insiders!

Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14361 for both PC and Mobile to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring! It’s been a week since the hand-off of the big red button and I can’t tell you how much I have appreciated the enthusiasm I have seen from all of you. You have kept me on my toes 24 hours a day with your questions, comments and humor, and I have so enjoyed getting to know so many of you. Thank you for all of the bug reports and Feedback Hub posts. We look at each and every one of them and have tried to create a build that will help you go about your business. Keep it coming!

Here’s what’s new in Build 14361

LastPass extension for Microsoft Edge: We are excited to announce that LastPass, a popular free password management extension, is now available for download. Visit our extensions page at the Microsoft Edge Dev website to learn more and try it out for yourself! Be sure to check out the list of known issues for the LastPass extension here.

Introducing Hyper-V Container: You can now use Docker natively on Windows 10 with Hyper-V Containers, to build, ship and run containers utilizing the Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 5 Nano Server container OS image. A new version of the Docker engine for Windows has also been made available that extends the support of containers while also improving the DockerFile syntax and getting started experience for users. For more details on how to get started with this check out the Windows container documentation or the Windows 10 Getting Started Guide.

Windows Ink improvements:

*The Windows Ink ruler is now long enough to span diagonally across the entire Surface Book display.
*We fixed an issue with the Windows Ink pencil tool, where the line when drawing along the ruler wouldn’t be flush with the ruler as well as an issue resulting in a slight flicker visible in the colored section when opening the Pen, Pencil or Highlighter flyout.
*We have updated the Touch Inking icon in Windows Ink Workspace to be more reminiscent of the Windows Ink Workspace icon.
*We improved the performance of loading the Sketchpad thumbnail in the Windows Ink Workspace flyout from the taskbar.
*Based on Insider feedback, we have made the “clear all” option more discoverable in Sketch Pad as the trash can icon in the menu bar. This was previously accessible as an option under the Erase button.

Settings improvements: We made some improvements to the Settings app based on Insider Feedback. The navigation pane is now white in light mode or black in dark mode and we have added a small block of color (which is same as the accent color of your profile) to highlight what Settings page you are on. Clicking anywhere on the Home button at the top left takes you to the Settings homepage. And we have made some other polish improvements, including slightly increasing the size of the page name text.

New icons: I’ve been told that Insiders love hearing about new icons. So I thought I would mention we have updated the Blu-ray icon so that it is more consistent with the other drive icons in Windows 10.

2.png

We also changed the icon for the network Quick Action to better represent it as an entry point to the network flyout (previously, it was a generic globe icon).

Other improvements and fixes for PC

We fixed the issue causing keyboard navigation in Store apps like Netflix or Tweetium to not work.
We fixed the issue causing certain websites like YouTube to fail to render in Microsoft Edge or IE due to a recently implemented feature called TCP Fast Open.
We fixed an issue resulting in a strange grey bar frequently being seen on the left side of the Microsoft Edge browser window (for example, after invoking a context menu).
The window of active hours for when you are using your PC has been increased from 10 to 12 hours under Settings > Update & security > Windows Update and “Change active hours”.
We have updated the download notification in Microsoft Edge to include filename, download status, and site domain on separate lines.
Fixed an issue that would cause the icons to disappear from the tabs in Microsoft Edge after the DPI change corresponding with remotely connecting to the PC via Remote Desktop.
We fixed an issue where DNG file thumbnails were not displaying in File Explorer.
We polished the appearance of Start by reducing the amount of whitespace at the top of Start, and adding logic so that the scrollbars will immediately hide once your mouse is no longer hovering over that area. We also fixed an issue resulting in clipping on the bottom or side of Start’s context menus.
We fixed an issue where pressing the Enter key would not submit the Wi-Fi password in the network flyout from the taskbar.
We decreased the size of icons used in notifications from 64×64 to 48×48 – maintaining the visibility, while improving the use of space in the Action Center.
We have improved the reliability of Cortana’s listening after tapping the mic button and fixed an issue that resulted in focus being lost to Cortana’s search box after a typed search has been deleted via backspace.
We have updated Windows Defender to not show recap notifications in normal mode if no scans have been run, or in scan-only mode if no threads have been found.
We fixed an issue that resulted in certain apps, such as Photos, not being able to set the desktop background.
Going forward from Build 14361, your Task Manager settings will now be preserved across build updates.
We fixed an issue where Start wouldn’t dismiss after launching Sticky Notes, leading to Sticky Notes appearing behind Start.
We fixed an issue resulting in not being able to set your account picture in Settings using the camera option.
We have added a keyboard shortcut for opening the taskbar’s clock and calendar flyout – this shortcut is WIN + Alt + D.
We fixed an issue where Command Prompt wasn’t maximizing correctly on high DPI monitors. We also fixed an issue where Command Prompt wouldn’t refresh the windows properly when doing an upwards Ctrl + F search with a long output of text.
We fixed an issue where the taskbar’s volume icon was showing incorrect states for 0% and muted.
We fixed an issue where applying a new save location on the Storage Settings page for any one file type would result in any other pending save location changes being lost.

Other improvements and fixes for Mobile

**We fixed the issue that was causing your phone to freeze after touching the screen immediately after enabling Narrator.
**We fixed an issue resulting in a strange grey bar frequently being seen on the left side of the Microsoft Edge browser window (for example, after invoking a context menu).
**Going forward from Build 14361, your preferred DPI setting will be backed up and reapplied when restoring your phone.
**We fixed an issue where “Find on Page” in Microsoft Edge wouldn’t always scroll the word into view. We also fixed an issue resulting in videos played on Facebook flickering if you started playing them after rotating the phone with the video in full screen mode.
**We fixed an issue where text was being truncated instead of wrapped in the Windows Insider Program page in the Settings app.
**We polished the notification dismissal model. Now if you receive and dismiss multiple interactive notifications in a row, the black transparent background will not start fading away between them. We fixed an issue that was making it more difficult to dismiss a notification with a hero image, an issue where peeking at a notification while watching Netflix would result in the video pausing, an issue where the keyboard could end up covering the quick reply text box, and an issue where certain notifications might just say “new notification” after a reboot. We also fixed an issue where Action Center would close unexpectedly quickly if a notification had been expanded when you start moving the Action Center’s border up. And we also fixed an issue where an incoming notification would stop Action Center from opening if you were in the process of swiping it down when a notification arrived.
**We fixed an issue resulting in the “now charging” sound frequently playing twice when the charging cable has been plugged in.
**We fixed an issue where the “Everytime” setting for how often to prompt for pin would be blank on the Sign-in Settings page after opening Settings from the Lock screen.
**We fixed an issue resulting in not being able to infinitely cycle left or right through the Phone app’s tabs.
**We fixed an issue where the Lumia 535 and 540 were not displaying a flash toggle in the Camera app.
**We have updated the text prediction engine for multilingual users, so now the candidates you see when selecting a word will be based on the active keyboard language, rather than the language that was active at the time the word was written.
**You can now use the keyboard with one hand with additional 5-inch devices such as the Lumia 640 and 830. To use this feature, press the space bar and slide the keyboard to the left or the right – whatever feels most comfortable for you! To return the keyboard to the center, press the space bar again, and slide it back to the middle. You can also slide the keyboard up, using the same method, so it’s closer to the top of the screen if you prefer a higher grip on your phone.
**We fixed an issue resulting in not being able to infinitely cycle left or right through the Phone app’s tabs.

Known issues for PC

If you have a French Windows 10 Insider Preview build installed on your PC, you will not receive Build 14361. There is an issue with the French translation process in this build that would revert a lot of text that was used to be shown in French back to English. So we have chosen not to release this build to Insiders whose base build is French. If your base build is not French and you have a French Language Pack installed – you will still be able to install the new French language pack on top of this build, but this issue will also impact you.
Text prediction using the Japanese IME will freeze your PC. To avoid this issue and continue using the Japanese IME, we recommend turning off text prediction. You can do this by right-clicking IME mode icon “A” or “あ” in systray and selecting “Properties”, clicking “Advanced”, and navigate to the “Predictive Input” tab and check off “Use predictive input system”. You can turn on prediction feature again by checking it on.
Navigating to the Privacy pages in Settings app will crash the Settings app and prevent you from adjusting your privacy settings. Your privacy settings already set will remain intact after updating to this build. If this is a blocker for you, you can move to the Slow ring until this bug is fixed or be sure to set your privacy settings before updating to this build.
If you click on a file download link outside of Microsoft Edge, sometimes Edge will open a tab and close it without doing anything. The workaround is to go to the Download pane and start the download there by clicking “Save” or “Save As”.
For certain languages, such as Chinese or Portuguese (Brazil), you will not be able to launch Start while an app is installing.

Known issues for Mobile

**You won’t be able to deploy an app via Visual Studio 2015 Update 2 to a phone running this build. As a workaround – you can deploy the app by using the Windows 10 Application Deployment (WinAppDeployCmd.exe) command-line tool.
**In some cases, the new cross-device Cortana features first highlighted in Build 14356 may not work.
**We are continuing to investigate data issues with some Dual-SIM devices where cellular data doesn’t work correctly with a second SIM. Several issues relating to cellular data with Dual-SIM devices have been reported by Insiders with the last two Mobile builds and we’re investigating these reports.

Coming soon – Windows 10 Anniversary Update June Bug Bash

Just like in April, we are doing another Bug Bash this month and will like to extend it to Windows Insiders. We want to make sure we focus on developing what is important and feedback from Windows Insiders as always goes a long way in helping us shape Windows. We will using Quests in Feedback Hub again as the main mechanism of highlight areas of the product we want to focus on. We will cycling Quests over 4 days next week and then bring them all back over the weekend for opportunity to give more feedback. Stay tuned for more details coming out next week in Feedback Hub or you can follow me on Twitter for updates.

Thank you for your passion and dedication to Windows. I *love* being on this joint team with you. I meant what I said earlier, I can’t imagine shipping this product without you.

Keep hustling,
Dona

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14366 & Mobile Build 14364
By Dona Sarkar / Software Engineer, Windows and Devices Group

Hello Windows Insiders!

WOW, what a week. You all were on fire last week with the all of the feedback for the double dose of PC + Mobile. I also appreciated you sharing your career/business goals with me this weekend. This is why we build Windows—to enable those goals to happen. Thank you!

Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14366 for PC and Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 14364 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring! We’re in the process of getting the Mobile build pushed out – I’ll update this blog post once we confirm it is live. As of 6:00pm Pacific Time – Build 14364 for Mobile is now available.

The team is now laser focused on getting ready to ship the Windows 10 Anniversary Update to customers this summer. This means you won’t see significant new features in builds for a little while. But these builds will include a bunch of really good and important fixes and general performance improvements that we need Windows Insiders to check out and give us feedback on. This update will go out to the 300+ million active devices already running Windows 10 today and beyond. Windows Insiders are critical to helping make that the Windows 10 Anniversary Update awesome for our customers.

Now for the exciting stuff: with today’s new builds for PC and Mobile, we are officially kicking off the Windows 10 Anniversary Update June Bug Bash. The bug bash has been an integral part of Windows culture as long as I can remember and one of my favorite weeks of the cycle. I have compiled a long list of techniques we have used to get out of our daily usage patterns which I’ll share with you throughout the week. This has always been an epic time of bonding for our team as we focus on one singular goal: to flush out those bugs that might have evaded us before this baby goes out into the world. We will be kicking off the bug bash internally today as well so know we’re all in it together!

Over the course of the next 4 days, we will also be publishing multiple Quests inside Feedback Hub that will highlight different areas of the product each day. We will be looking for feedback on each Quest, but you can also just use all the Windows 10 features and apps you are most passionate about. The goal is just to work together now through Sunday to get the best bug reports possible! We are cycling the Quests over the week but will be bringing them all back over the weekend for more feedback.

Just like with the last Bug Bash, the Quests that you will see are not traditional Quests that list steps of trying a feature or scenario out. Many of them are open ended intentionally so that you can perform the steps that come naturally to you in order to finish the Quest and give us feedback on it. Many of them also list more than one scenario that can be tried out to finish the Quest. Many of the Quests for the Bug Bash will lead back to Feedback Hub so that you can upvote existing feedback or give new feedback based on your experience of completing the Quest. For some, you will be directed back to the traditional 5-point rating question.

Just like last time, the Quest will be marked as with:

LIMITED TIME Quests: Quests marked as “LIMITED TIME” will expire within 24hrs of being published so make sure you get to these before the time runs out and they’re replaced with new Quests.

ADVANCED Quests: Quests marked as “ADVANCED” are more technical and may require changing the system configuration on your device and require an understanding on how to revert the changes after the Quest is done. You should only perform Quests that you feel comfortable doing, if something goes wrong you’ll need to be able to troubleshoot how to get back to a good state on your PC.

After you get this new build installed, open up Feedback Hub and get started. We’re REALLY excited about being able to include you for the first time on something that is part of our internal engineering culture at Microsoft. As I’ve been talking to our engineering team all week, I keep seeing big smiles and lots of excitement as people talk about how awesome it is to include Insiders as part of our team activities because you *are* a part of our team. We’re shipping this product together and I again stress how valuable your feedback is.

We hope you have fun with this, and send us some great bug reports. For more information on this week’s Bug Bash – see this post in Feedback Hub on more details. For those who participated in last Bug Bash in April – thank you. Badges in Feedback Hub will be coming out soon to recognition your help!

Some new things

Office Online for Microsoft Edge: Use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Sway Online without needing Office installed. The Office Online extension is the quickest way to view, edit, create Office files in Microsoft Edge! You can also quickly access your recent files, thanks to integration with OneDrive and OneDrive for Business. Visit our extensions page at the Microsoft Edge Dev website to learn more and try it out for yourself!

Windows Store Update: A Store update (Version 11606.1000.43.0) is rolling out today that includes some good performance improvements to prevent the Store from crashing and using up too much resources on your devices. You should see an overall improvement navigating the Store and visiting app pages.

Improvements and fixes for PC (Build 14366)

For you mes amis: If you have a French Windows 10 Insider Preview build installed on your PC, you should receive this build as we have fixed the issue with the French translation process that caused a lot of text to revert from French back to English.

We’ve updated the size of the Windows Ink Workspace icon in the notification area on the taskbar to be more consistent with the other notification area icons. In a similar drive to improve the consistency of our experience, we’ve updated the X to leave the Windows Ink Workspace which will now show a red state when you hover over it. We also fixed an issue where mouse wheel scrolling wouldn’t work to spin the ruler with certain mice, and an issue where dismissing the share pane or accepting the prompt to enter tablet mode would result in exiting the Windows Ink Workspace.
We have updated Cortana search results, so now when you right-click on a .docx file, you’ll see a context menu option to open that file’s location.

We fixed an issue when the tile names could become cut off after using semantic zoom, and one where Start tiles could no longer be moved with touch.
In an effort to improve visibility and access to your newly installed apps, we have moved the “Recently added” section of Start to be located above the “Most used” section in the All apps list. We’ve also increased the duration of time in which apps will be listed here – now 7 days, so you can easily try them out and decide if you want to pin them to Start or the taskbar for regular use and quick access.
We fixed an issue where an active VPN connection could block the PC from going from idle into sleep.
We fixed an issue where the touch keyboard might appear on the Lock screen after pressing the Num-Lock key on the keyboard.
We fixed an issue that could result in Microsoft Edge using a large amount of CPU when open to a page with many animated gifs, as well as an issue resulting in certain captchas not displaying correctly.
From this build on your default location will now be preserved across build updates.
We fixed an issue resulting in nothing happening if you attempted to expand a Skype notification in Action Center. We also fixed an issue where the scrollbar would draw with no margin from the chevron and X in Action Center notifications, and one where app logos might be missing from the Action Center.
We fixed an issue resulting in the cursor not showing up when interacting with the system using a Wacom tablet.
We fixed an issue where the Settings app could open to a blank page after selecting a settings page via search results.
We fixed an issue where the File Explorer window might navigate back to Quick Access after deleting something from the current folder in view. We also fixed an issue where right-clicking on the desktop might result in showing a spinning curser for a long time before the context menu would show.
We fixed an issue resulting in existing reminders failing to display in the Cortana UI, and an error when attempting to save a new reminder.
We have updated the Mobile Hotspot settings page to allow name, IP address, and mac address to be selectable so it can be copied elsewhere if needed.
We fixed an issue where the battery flyout might not report the correct overall charging state for devices with two batteries.
We fixed an issue where the title bars of apps using dark theme wouldn’t be dark when the window was not in focus, for example, Groove Music or Settings app.
We fixed an issue resulting in you sometimes seeing a progress indicator before the background image would load on the Lock screen.
ADDED 6/15: We fixed an issue where Text prediction using the Japanese IME would freeze your PC. If you turned the prediction setting off for workaround, please turn it back to on. You can do this by right-clicking IME mode icon “A” or “あ” in systray and selecting “Properties”, clicking “Advanced”, and navigate to the “Predictive Input” tab and check on “Use predictive input system”.

Improvements and fixes for Mobile (Build 14364)

*We made some fit-and-finish updates to the Settings app such as tightening the spacing between checkboxes (like on the Sounds settings page). We also fixed an issue where settings pages wouldn’t show a progress indicator if they needed a while to load.
*We fixed an issue where a number of app logos were missing from notifications, despite them being visible in the Action Center.
*We fixed an issue where the Alarms and Clock Live tile would still show that an alarm was active after a one-time alarm had gone off and been dismissed.
*We fixed an issue where Cortana would prompt you to unlock your device before reading a text over Bluetooth.
*We fixed an issue resulting in Microsoft Edge crashing when trying to scroll certain webpage.
*We fixed an issue where disconnecting from Bluetooth speakers would result in the phone being set to vibrate if it hadn’t already.

Known issues for PC (Build 14366)

The Desktop App Converter Preview (Project Centennial) will fail to run on the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14366. If you are a developer utilizing the converter tool to convert your desktop app to UWP, we suggest skipping Build 14366 or switching to the Slow ring until we can fix this issue.
If you click on a file download link outside of Microsoft Edge, sometimes Edge will open a tab and close it without doing anything. The workaround is to go to the Download pane and start the download there by clicking “Save” or “Save As”.
Narrator does not launch when you toggle switch to “on” via Settings app > Ease of access > Narrator.

Known issues for Mobile (Build 14364)

*You won’t be able to deploy an app via Visual Studio 2015 Update 2 to a phone running this build. As a workaround – you can deploy the app by using the Windows 10 Application Deployment (WinAppDeployCmd.exe) command-line tool. We are working to get a build out with this fixed as soon as possible.
*We are investigating data issues with some Dual-SIM devices where cellular data doesn’t work correctly with a second SIM. Several issues relating to cellular data with Dual-SIM devices have been reported by Insiders with the last two Mobile builds and we’re investigating these reports.
*After installing this build, you may notice your Quick Actions icons are not in the same order.

That’s it for now. We’ll share our bug bashing pics and we hope you do too. Keep hustling,

Dona

This opens Feedback Hub and attaches a screenshot of your PC (you can review and remove this before you submit). The old PC keyboard shortcut of Windows key + SHIFT + ? will stop working because of this change.

Also, as a reminder, on Mobile you can use VOL DOWN + POWER to launch Feedback Hub.

Handwriting Recognition Language Support: We are excited to announce 23 new languages for handwriting recognition as a tech preview. This includes Indonesian, Malay, and is our first time to support African languages like Swahili, Xhosa and Zulu. You can install them from language settings and use them in the handwriting keyboard. If you are a developer, you can also leverage them in your apps following the guide to recognize ink as text. Please check the list of supported languages, give them a try, and send us your feedback.

A new tool to give your PC a fresh start: We’ve heard from many of you that are attempting to perform a clean installation of Windows that it can sometimes be hard to get started. To help, we are providing a new tool that enables an easy and simple way to start fresh with a clean installation of Windows. This tool is now available from the Settings app for Windows Insiders using the latest builds that installs a clean copy of the most recent version of Windows10 and removes apps that were installed on your PC. You can visit this Microsoft Community page (which has been updated) to learn more about the tool and download it.

Improvements and fixes for PC

Cross-device notifications from your phone to your PC via Cortana are now more reliable and faster. You can also use quick replies from your PC for notifications that support that feature (there is a known issue in which this will only work if your phone’s screen is turned on – we’ll be fixing this!). Additionally, notifications from your phone to your PC will appear under its own Windows Phone group in Action Center – with a fancy new logo to boot!
We fixed an issue where the emoji in cross-device notifications would appear as boxes. We also fixed an issue where certain emoji would appear as square boxes in some apps like Notepad.
We have fixed the issue with the Desktop App Converter Preview (Project Centennial) however you will need to download the updated version here http://aka.ms/converter.
Fixed an issue resulting in the dialog when joining the PC to an Azure AD potentially being unexpectedly large on certain devices
Quick Actions in Action Center that turn on and off different functionality in your device, like Bluetooth on your phone or Tablet Mode on your PC, now have a transient On/Off text indicator so you can clearly see the state change for these. We fixed an issue where the WIN + A keyboard shortcut to launch Action Center wouldn’t work if Action Center icon had been turned off. We also fixed an issue where certain notifications could result in the Action Center not launching until that toast had been cleared.
We fixed an issue where Cortana wasn’t showing relevant system settings results for certain terms, in particular “typo” or “connect”.
We fixed an issue where the text in the network flyout might change color from white to black when entering credentials if your PC is using dark mode.
We fixed an issue where PowerShell shortcuts pinned to the taskbar could only create one functional window – subsequent windows generated from the pinned icon would not accept input.
We fixed an issue where each newly opened notes in Sticky Notes would flash white and black after a certain number of notes had already been created.
We added a new shortcut to turn on/off Private mode when using the Japanese Input Method Editor. This new keyboard shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + P. We also increased the width of the Japanese 12 key keyboard for small devices when in portrait, so as to improve ease of use and fixed an issue where no characters would be input when using this keyboard in a field where Input Method Editors are disabled
We updated the Update & Security, Windows Update and Recovery icons in Settings, to be more reflective of the action
We fixed an issue where the Office apps might not show up in Start’s “Most used” list.
We fixed an issue where saying “Hey Cortana” would launch Cortana behind Windows Ink Workspace.
We fixed an issue resulting in Explorer.exe crashing if you selected “Open Command window here” from File Explorer’s context menu.

Improvements and fixes for Mobile

**For all of my fellow devs: you should now be able to deploy an app via Visual Studio 2015 Update 2 to a phone running this build. Thanks for being patient!
**We fixed the issue where Quick Actions in the Settings app were flipped from the order you saw it in the Action Center.
**We fixed an issue resulting in existing reminders failing to display in Cortana’s reminder section, and an error when attempting to save a new reminder.
**We fixed an issue where the text selection grippers would appear very tiny in certain places on high DPI phones, such as when selecting text in the reply textbox of an interactive notification.
**We reduced battery usage when Microsoft Edge is running in the background.
**We polished Action Center so that font size of dropdowns in interactive notifications is now consistent with surrounding text.
**We fixed an issue where Battery Saver wouldn’t be turned on after tapping the notification prompting you to turn on Battery Saver when battery is at 20%.
**We fixed an issue that could result in dropped keystrokes when typing in Outlook Mail or Word Mobile.
**We fixed an issue where, for phones that support it, the “3G Only” and “Only 3G or 4G” cellular options were not working correctly for some Insiders, resulting in 2G networks being selected.
**We fixed an issue resulting in the Japanese Input Method Editor not working correctly in the All apps list search box.
**We updated the Phone Update and Update & Security icons in the Settings app to be more reflective of the action.
**Quick Actions in Action Center that turn on and off different functionality in your device, like Bluetooth on your phone or Tablet Mode on your PC, now have a transient On/Off text indicator so you can clearly see the state change for these. We fixed an issue where if you swiped up on a full screen VOIP notification, the dimmed screen behind it would flash. We also fixed an issue where you may not receive notification toasts until the next time the Action Center had been opened if you had tapped on a notification on the Lock screen but then aborted the prompt to enter your pin.
**We fixed an issue where Lock screen page in Settings may show incorrect data while page is loading.
**We fixed an issue where Quiet Hours might unexpectedly turn off after having been manually turned on using the Quick Action.
**We fixed an issue where certain sample images were displaying in portrait rather than landscape when used as a Lock screen background and phone was connected to an external monitor. In fixing this, these sample images have now become available to select as a background for your second monitor using Continuum.
**We fixed an issue that could result in key presses sometimes being entered multiple times over Miracast.
**We fixed an issue where the “The accessory you’re connecting to isn’t working” error was truncated on the Connect settings page.
**We fixed an issue where the Windows Hello icon might get stuck on the screen after logging in.
**We fixed an issue where selecting a letter from the All apps list would sometimes scroll that letter to the bottom of the screen, rather than the top.

Known issues for PC

Narrator does not launch when you toggle switch to “on” via Settings app > Ease of access > Narrator.

Known issues for Mobile

**We are investigating data issues with some Dual-SIM devices where cellular data doesn’t work correctly with a second SIM. Several issues relating to cellular data with Dual-SIM devices have been reported by Insiders with the last two Mobile builds and we’re investigating these reports. Thank you for giving us this feedback.
**There is an issue where certain apps won’t be able to set Start or Lock screen backgrounds.

Other items of note

After taking a look at the overall usage of the Kids Corner feature in Windows 10 Mobile and Windows Phone 8.1, we have decided to remove this feature from Windows 10 Mobile beginning with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. The usage of Kids Corner was too low to justify continued development and support of the feature. While not a replacement with the same functionality, you can try out Apps Corner under Settings > Accounts > Apps Corner which has some of the functionality as Kids Corner such as the ability to give people access to selected apps on your phone as well as a customized Start screen when they use your phone.

It’s been amazing to see your feedback and bug reports come pouring in. Please also take the time to upvote other people’s feedback so that we have an accurate representation of the impact of these issues & have the most accurate top bugs list to tackle. Our team is working to get more and more fixes to unblock you as fast as we can.

Keep hustling,
Dona

Preview Build 14376

June 28, 2016 3:01 pm

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14376 for PC and Mobile
By Dona Sarkar / Software Engineer, Windows and Devices Group

Hello my Windows Insiders!

Since you all seemed to like the breakneck build pace last week, we’re starting the week off right and releasing not one, not two, not three…but *four* builds today. Today we are releasing Build 14376 for both PC and Mobile to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. The late nights continue in Redmond and this build has nearly 1,800 fixes over the last build – with many of the notable fixes and improvements listed below.

For Windows Insiders in the Slow ring, we are releasing Build 14372 for PC and Mobile to you today as well.

IMPORTANT: Today, we are pushing a few builds out to into our internal rings in addition to today’s Fast and Slow builds and as a result of that, the builds for PC for the Fast and Slow rings is a little bit behind in rolling out and should be available in the next few hours depending on your region. Update 4:00pm Pacific: The PC builds should be live!

Improvements and fixes for PC

We’re rolling out an Store update (11606.1001.25) that improves performance and reliability and includes fixes for accessibility as well.
Clicking on networks or VPN connections in the network flyout on the taskbar should now launch the network settings page like it should. We also fixed an issue where the network flyout would sometimes only show the network settings link, despite being currently connected to Wi-Fi.
For my dev peeps: we fixed the issue causing an error message when you enable Developer Mode due to the necessary package needed from Windows Update not being published appropriately. Go forth and create!
We have updated Narrator to now support using physical volume buttons to adjust the volume while Narrator is in Scan Mode. We also fixed an issue that could result in Narrator crashing when arrowing through list entries.
We have updated Windows Hello on the Lock screen to not repeat the name of the person logging in, when it is already displayed on the screen.
We have fixed an issue where you might be unable to type in some UWP apps. We also fixed an issue resulting in certain Polish characters being duplicated when typed into UWP apps.
We fixed an issue where the Lock screen background might not be displayed correctly.
We fixed an issue where your password would revert be being hidden if you tried to edit it while holding the reveal button.
We fixed an issue where the search dropdown in the Settings app could end up displaying above the search box instead of below it. We also fixed an issue where the “For developers” settings page would be blank while checking for an optional package, and an issue resulting in no handwriting, speech and other optional components being listed for languages that do support them.
We fixed an issue that could result in not being able to turn on “set time zone automatically”.
We fixed an issue where the icons in some Start menu tiles could appear zoomed in, for example Alarms & Clock app or Calculator app.
We have improved the consistency in scrolling and zooming speeds between monitors when using a precision touchpad on a multiple-monitor setup.
We fixed an issue that could result in Explorer.exe crashing after receiving a notification from Microsoft Edge.
We fixed an issue where the caret might jump to the beginning of the line, rather than maintaining current y axis position when using the up and down arrow keys in a textbox in Microsoft Edge.
We fixed an issue resulting in an authentication error when launching mstsc.exe from an elevated Command Prompt.

Improvements and fixes for Mobile

**We’re rolling out an Store update (11606.1001.25) that improves performance and reliability and includes fixes for accessibility as well.
**The Gadgets app has been updated to fix issues using it with a Microsoft Display Dock.
**We fixed an issue that could result in tiles pinned to Start from within an app being blank after a restore. We also fixed an issue that could result in multiple Live tiles no longer updating until the phone had been rebooted.
**We fixed an issue making it difficult to download certain offline maps via Settings > System > Offline maps, as the list would jump back to the top when you reached close to the bottom.
**We fixed an issue resulting in the Camera app intermittently freezing for a second when used in certain apps.
**We fixed an issue resulting in links no longer working in Microsoft Edge after exiting one-handed mode while a webpage is loading. We also fixed an issue where the enter key would act as if it had been pressed twice on some websites, resulting in two new lines being entered.
**We have improved the reliability of going between camera roll and Camera app.
**We fixed an issue where estimated time remaining for battery life under Settings > System > Battery could be clipped. We also improved performance of enumerating the list of apps in under Settings > System > Storage.
**We fixed an issue where the link in Cortana to download a speech language would open the Settings app homepage instead of going directly to Settings > Time and language > Language.
**We fixed an issue where the checkmarks in checkboxes in high contrast mode didn’t use the correct contrast ratio making them difficult to see.

Known issues for PC

We don’t have any known issues to list at the moment for PC. If anything comes up, we’ll update this post and add them here.

Known issues for Mobile

**You can open PDFs in Microsoft Edge but won’t be able to use touch to interact with the PDF (such as scrolling, pan or zoom). When you try to use touch to interact with a PDF, it will constantly reload the PDF.
**We’ve heard you and we are investigating decreases in battery life on older devices such as the Lumia 830, 930, and 1520.
**We’re also investigating Wi-Fi disconnect issues – if you are experiencing an issue with your Wi-Fi disconnecting, please see this forum post and make sure to upvote Wi-Fi disconnecting issues in the Feedback Hub.
**We have changed the backup format for Windows 10 Mobile devices to reduce the size of the backup stored in OneDrive. As a result, if you do a backup on a device running the latest Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview builds and move back to the released version of Windows 10 Mobile (Build 10586) and restore from your backup – your Start screen layout won’t restore and remain the default Start layout. Your previous backup also gets overwritten. If you need to go back to Build 10586 temporarily, once you are on Build 10586 you should disable backup so it doesn’t overwrite the good backup from Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview builds.

Other items of note

We have been testing with Windows Insiders a preview of the “Messaging everywhere” feature that allows you to receive and send text messages from your Windows 10 phone directly to and from your Windows 10 PC. The experience was well-received by Insiders however we believe we can deliver an even better experience through the Skype app. Because of this, we decided not to release this feature as part of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update this summer. Starting with Build 14376 and going forward, Insiders will no longer have the ability to reply to text messages from their phone via the Messaging app on their PCs. The ability to reply to text messages on your PC using Cortana is unaffected. Going forward, we will be working with the Skype Team on delivering a great “messaging everywhere” experience on your Windows 10 devices through the Skype app. We will share more details about this experience in the months ahead.

All right, that’s it (for now). Don’t get comfortable. Keep hustling,
Dona <3

Preview Build 14379

June 30, 2016 3:01 pm

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14379 for PC and Mobile
By Dona Sarkar / Software Engineer, Windows and Devices Group

Hello my Windows Insiders!

This week we have been hosting a Continuum App Contest in Redmond and it’s been really cool to see the awesome apps our dev Insiders have created. I installed the finalists’ apps and love how useful they are to my day-to-day—on both PC AND Phone. You all should check them out, there are some that are quite—Insider-y

You can get a Perfect Workout—anywhere! The graphics & animations on this app are simply wow and failure-proof.

You can keep track of what’s going on with world currencies (along with a TON of other functionality) with Calc Pro (coming soon to HoloLens as well!).

I have my personal blog on WordPress, so I really loved WP for Windows (which has gorgeous magazine style layouts and a read-out-loud feature!).

EZPodder is perfect for me to consume TED Radio & my other fave podcasts from anywhere (the presentation also came with a free Design for non-Designers lesson along with MVVN design patterns example, which was awesome for a nerd like me!).

And of course, what is life without a hilarious Meme Generator Suite (and there are a TON of templates especially for you, my creative Windows Insiders!).

We in Redmond are about to take off for the long weekend to celebrate the 4th of July weekend, BUT before then we wanted to give you what we’ve been working on. Today we are releasing Build 14379 for both PC and Mobile to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring with another batch of bug fixes based on feedback:

Improvements and fixes for PC

We fixed an issue where the size of the Credential UI might not be big enough to display the contents on a PC with High DPI.
We fixed an issue where Action Center might crash after dismissing a large number of notifications.
We fixed an issue where Centennial app launches from Start or Cortana wouldn’t count towards those apps bubbling up in Start’s “Most used” list.
We fixed an issue where no note would have keyboard focus after minimizing then reopening the Sticky Notes app.

Improvements and fixes for Mobile

We fixed an issue that could result in a stray focus rectangle becoming visible in certain apps, such as Groove or Cortana, after bringing up the keyboard.
We fixed an issue where the aspect ratio of images on live tile wasn’t preserved if they need to be shrunk, leading to them appearing stretched.

Known issues for PC

Using Continuum from your phone on your PC via the Connect app will not work. This should be fixed in the next build.

Known issues for Mobile

*You can open PDFs in Microsoft Edge but won’t be able to use touch to interact with the PDF (such as scrolling, pan or zoom). When you try to use touch to interact with a PDF, it will constantly reload the PDF.
*We’ve heard you and we are investigating decreases in battery life on older devices such as the Lumia 830, 930, and 1520.
W*e’re also investigating Wi-Fi disconnect issues – if you are experiencing an issue with your Wi-Fi disconnecting, please see this forum post and make sure to upvote Wi-Fi disconnecting issues in the Feedback Hub.
*REMINDER: We have changed the backup format for Windows 10 Mobile devices to reduce the size of the backup stored in OneDrive.

Check out some of those sweet apps for Phone and PC, play with the build. have a fantastic weekend and as always, keep hustling,
Dona <3

Preview Build 14383

July 7, 2016 10:01 am

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14383 for PC and Mobile
By Dona Sarkar / Software Engineer, Windows and Devices Group

Hello my Windows Insiders!

We wanted to share with you the winner of the Continuum app contest from last week. It was a super hard decision, but we went with Vuong Chung from Vietnam. His app, Perfect Workout, can be found here. You can check out the finalists’ apps from my blog here. We were really happy to have heavy involvement from our engineering team for coaching and judging as well as sponsorship and support from HP for this event. Vuong took home quite a haul for his work. He received a Lumia 950, a Continuum Display Dock, an Office 365 Subscription, a copy of Visual Studio Pro, an HP Elite XP3 phone, $1,000 Advertising Credit on the Microsoft Store and my fave: A Surface Book.

Congrats to Vuong. We love his app!

In build news: today we are releasing Build 14383 for both PC and Mobile to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. On PC, you will notice a few things are different with this build. For example, the desktop watermark is now gone. This is because we’re beginning to check in final code in preparation for releasing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update to customers on August 2nd. But we’re not finished yet and will have more builds to release to Windows Insiders between now and then. Remember you guys play a big role in helping us decide which are the final *final* bits that we ship globally.

Improvements and fixes for PC

The link to “Get more extensions from the Store” under the Extensions pane in Microsoft Edge now takes you directly to the Store to download available extensions.
We have changed the keyboard shortcut to invoke Cortana in listening mode to Win + Shift + C based on feedback from Insiders experiencing a large number of unintended activations of Cortana while in listening mode. Speaking “Hey Cortana”, when enabled in Cortana Settings, continues to invoke Cortana in listening mode as it always has.
Going forward from this build, updates to the Quick Action area of Action Center will be preserved across upgrades.
We fixed an issue where disconnecting the Surface Book from an external monitor set as primary might result in the Surface Book screen showing in portrait rather than landscape until having detached and reattached the screen.
We fixed an issue where the Settings app was showing media controls in the taskbar preview window.
We fixed an issue where dragging the file comparison or manage library dialogs between two monitors with different DPIs would result in the dialog content no longer displaying correctly
We fixed an issue where the checkmark used to indicate a selected state in app bar toggle buttons wasn’t visible in high contrast, for example in the Photos menu under “…”.
We fixed an issue where connecting to a PC using Remote Desktop when a maximized window is immediately behind the Remote Desktop dialog would result in the subsequent the Credential UI window being displayed behind the maximized window.
We fixed an issue where, with certain monitor configurations, Explorer.exe would hang after a tooltip is displaying.
We fixed an issue resulting in certain Bluetooth mice, such as the Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse, sometimes accelerating erratically when moving the cursor across the screen.
We fixed an issue where on certain webpages in Microsoft Edge when Narrator was in Scan mode and going line by line through a list of hyperlinks, Narrator wouldn’t announce the fact that these were hyperlinks.
We fixed an issue with certain websites potentially causing a memory leak and becoming unresponsive in Microsoft Edge when the LastPass extension had been enabled.

Improvements and fixes for Mobile

**We have improved battery performance for those who tend to quickly turn the screen on and off in order to look at the Lock screen.
**We fixed an issue in Microsoft Edge where zooming in and out of embedded maps could sometimes result in the map jumping to an unexpected location.
**We fixed an issue resulting in volume mute not working on certain devices, such as the Lumia 640, when playing YouTube videos that use the OPUS audio codec.
**We fixed an issue where if you are connected to a car via Bluetooth that supports it, tapping “End Call” on the car’s console wouldn’t work while an incoming text was being announced.
**We fixed an issue resulting in not being about to make Store purchases using mobile operator billing when using an Orange SIM.
**We fixed an issue resulting in Groove sometimes unexpectedly pausing music after music has manually been paused and resumed.
**We fixed an issue resulting in the keyboard sometimes outputting @ and € instead of “a” and “e” for certain languages in Windows Phone 8.1 apps.
**We fixed an issue resulting in many Windows Phone 8.1 games seeming to play in slow motion on certain devices, such as the Lumia 535.
**We fixed an issue where notifications received while the screen was off didn’t take into consideration the proximity sensor, resulting in the screen turning on to display the notification while in pockets, potentially leading to accidental screen presses.
**We fixed an issue where Visual Voicemail setup wouldn’t appear after hard resetting the device.
**We fixed an issue resulting in tiles pinned from within apps sometimes being blank and not falling back to show the app name within the tile. Also fixed an issue where “SIM 2” title was missing from pinned Messaging and Phone tiles for the second SIM.
**We fixed an issue resulting in incorrect Start screen scaling after switching from Continuum/Extended Desktop to Mirrored/Duplicated screen on devices with a non-default DPI.
**We fixed an issue resulting in there sometimes being a delay when showing the missed call count on the Phone app Live tile.

Known issues for PC

If you are seeing a notification pop-up once a day that started on 7/1 saying that your Windows evaluation copy expires on 7/15/2016, don’t worry – this is a superfluous dialog and your OS won’t expire. The dialog will also go away soon.
A recent fix went into place for the Hyper-V firmware that will that affect the ability to boot Windows Server 2016 Tech Preview 5 VMs with Secure Boot enabled. A fix for TP5 builds has been developed however, due to release schedules, the Insider Preview build changes will be released before the TP5 fix is released. During that time, if you try to boot a new TP5 VM with Secure Boot enabled, it will fail. The workaround is to disable Secure Boot during this period.

Known issues for Mobile

**Voice Recorder does not show up consistently as an option for Call Recording.
**You can open PDFs in Microsoft Edge but won’t be able to use touch to interact with the PDF (such as scrolling, pan or zoom). When you try to use touch to interact with a PDF, it will constantly reload the PDF.
**REMINDER: We have changed the backup format for Windows 10 Mobile devices to reduce the size of the backup stored in OneDrive.

It’s feeling like ship season around here and we can’t wait to see what you think of this build. Keep hustling,
Dona <3

Preview Build 14388

July 12, 2016 3:02 pm

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14388 for PC and Mobile
By Dona Sarkar / Software Engineer, Windows and Devices Group

Hello my Windows Insiders!

I’m at the Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) this week to meet partners and customers to understand the needs of their businesses and brands. Yesterday I gave a talk about what I have learned about my first 41 days about being the Insider lead and what I envision for the future of the program. Nothing should be a surprise for you, my Insiders. We are all about education and empowerment to transform every industry with our tech skills in the next decade. The audience had quite a few questions about how to engage their own customers in different industries (autos, medical, construction) and I learned quite a bit about how these industries differ from tech. It got me thinking about how to help these leaders build fans-as-part-of-product programs like ours. You can find the audio and slides from the talk here.

In build news, today we are releasing Build 14388 for both PC and Mobile to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. This build has 44 new fixes in it including a bunch of fixes to improvement reliability and battery life and improvements to accessibility. A few of the most notable fixes are listed below.

Improvements and fixes for PC

We have updated the Store to version 11606.1001.39 with bug fixes.
We fixed an issue where Narrator keyboard shortcuts would not work after locking your PC and then logging back in and going to your desktop.
We fixed an issue where Narrator would not read the date and time under Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
We fixed a TPM driver crash that could result in the device bug-checking (bluescreen) and rebooting.

Improvements and fixes for Mobile

**We have updated the Store to version 11606.1001.39 with bug fixes.
**We fixed the issue causing the keyboard to not show up consistently for InPrivate mode on Microsoft Edge.
**We fixed an issue that could result in an app getting into a state after being suspended where it would be unable to launch until rebooting the device.

Known issues for PC

A recent fix went into place for the Hyper-V firmware that will that affect the ability to boot Windows Server 2016 Tech Preview 5 VMs with Secure Boot enabled. A fix for TP5 builds has been developed however, due to release schedules, the Insider Preview build changes will be released before the TP5 fix is released. During that time, if you try to boot a new TP5 VM with Secure Boot enabled, it will fail. The workaround is to disable Secure Boot during this period.
After you install this build on a PC using a non-EN-US language, you may get error code 0x80004005 when enabling Developer Mode on the “For Developers” Settings Page. Even after seeing this error message, your machine is in developer mode and you should still be able to use Visual Studio to develop Universal Windows Applications. In most cases, this error indicates that extra components required by the operating system to enable additional debugging features in Visual Studio or the Windows Device Portal could not be installed automatically.

To fix this:

#1. Go to Settings > System.
#2. Click on “Apps & features”
#3. Choose “Manage Optional features”
#4. Press the button “Add a feature”
#5. Select the package for Windows Developer Mode
#6. Click “Install”
#7. Reboot your PC
#8. Launch Command Prompt as Administrator
#9. Run: sc config debugregsvc start=auto

Finally, return to the “For Developers” Settings page. You will still see the error code, 0x80004005 but you should now be able to enable Windows Device Portal and the Device Discovery features.

Known issues for Mobile

**Voice Recorder does not show up consistently as an option for Call Recording. We heard your feedback and plan to release a Voice Recorder app update via the Store soon that has the fix for this issue.
**Wallet users are prompted for a PIN twice when using tap to pay from a locked phone. You can enter their PIN twice and tap as usual once the phone is unlocked.
**REMINDER: We have changed the backup format for Windows 10 Mobile devices to reduce the size of the backup stored in OneDrive.

We’re getting down to the wire, my Insiders. Thank you for your dedication this past weekend and every day.

Keep hustling,
Dona <3

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14390 for PC and Mobile
By Dona Sarkar / Software Engineer, Windows and Devices Group

Hello my Windows Insiders!

I spent a few days this week at our Worldwide Partner Conference in Toronto this week and one of the most exciting things for me was how much people are talking about the Windows Insider Program. We got multiple shout-outs during the keynotes (by Satya on Monday, by Bryan Roper and his Bridgestone Tire on Tuesday) as well as a segment on Windows Weekly and the whole SurfaceSmiths podcast. The photo below is of the local Windows Insiders dinner where we got to know an incredibly diverse group of Insiders who are leading in the Toronto area. We can’t wait to do more of these types of things globally. It’s pretty cool to see people who have been a part of the Windows ecosystem for a long time be genuinely excited and curious about how the Insiders are going to transform the world next. I love being on this journey with you. Thank you!

And now, the build news: today we are releasing Build 14390 for both PC and Mobile to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring.

The Microsoft Edge Team has a new extension to tell you about that many of you have been waiting for:

Amazon Assistant: Amazon’s official browser extension is now available for Microsoft Edge! Amazon Assistant helps you make better decisions wherever you shop online by giving you access to Deal of the Day, Product Comparison, Wish List and Shortcuts to your favorite Amazon destinations. Check out all of the available extensions by launching Microsoft Edge, opening the “…”menu, selecting “Extensions” and then clicking “Get extensions from the Store”.”

You should no longer see the error code 0x80004005 when enabling Developer Mode on the “For Developers” Settings page if your PC is using a non-EN-US language.

Known issues for PC

AWARENESS: A recent fix went into place for the Hyper-V firmware that will that affect the ability to boot Windows Server 2016 Tech Preview 5 VMs with Secure Boot enabled.

*Voice Recorder does not show up consistently as an option for Call Recording. We heard your feedback and plan to release a Voice Recorder app update via the Store soon that has the fix for this issue.
*Wallet users are prompted for a PIN twice when using tap to pay from a locked phone. You can enter their PIN twice and tap as usual once the phone is unlocked. A fix for this will come as a Wallet app update via the Store.
*REMINDER: We have changed the backup format for Windows 10 Mobile devices to reduce the size of the backup stored in OneDrive.

Team, we’re getting down to the wire for the Anniversary Update release. Please install this build and try things differently than usual this weekend. We still have our quests published in Feedback Hub. We’re going to be doing these this weekend, so if you do as well, please send us feedback on them. I’m going to be creating images on Sketchpad for an IoT project I want to do with you guys next month. I’ll tweet pics as I go.

We are so grateful to be sprinting the finish line with you by our side. Thank you!!!

Keep hustling,

Preview Build 14393

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14393 for PC and Mobile
By Dona Sarkar / Software Engineer, Windows and Devices Group

Hello my Windows Insiders!

I hope everyone had an awesome weekend. Many of you know that helping people learn tech is a deep passion of mine so I spent some time working on some UWP app ideas that the we can do with you all, both in-person and online. We are always looking to learn new things (such as IoT development) and what better way that alongside all of you. I’ll share some videos of the progress we make.

In build news, today we are releasing Build 14393 for both PC and Mobile to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. This build includes a handful of new fixes to take note of:

Improvements and fixes for PC

We have improved the reliability of Start, Cortana, and Action Center.
You should now be able to mount iPods as USB mass-storage devices.

Improvements and fixes for Mobile

**We fixed an issue resulting in rapid battery drain when Visual Voicemail syncs voicemail messages on Dual SIM devices like the Lumia 950 XL.
**We also fixed an issue causing some battery drain on older devices like the Lumia 535, 640, 735, 830, 930 and Icon.
**We fixed the issue causing Voice Recorder to not show up consistently as an option for Call Recording. A app update was released last Friday that fixes this issue. Make sure you have the app version 10.1607.1931.0.
**We fixed several issues impacting Dual SIM capabilities. Using a device with two SIMs should work as it should.

Known issues for PC

We are aware of certain cases in which Surface Books and Surface Pro 4’s may bugcheck (bluescreen) due to a camera driver issue. An updated driver will roll-out via Windows Update soon that will fix this.

Known issues for Mobile

**We are continuing to investigate W-Fi issues on certain devices.
**Turning off Bluetooth can sometimes result in freeze, crash, or reset. See this forum post for more details.
**Wallet users are prompted for a PIN twice when using tap to pay from a locked phone. You can enter their PIN twice and tap as usual once the phone is unlocked. A fix for this will come as a Wallet app update via the Store.
**REMINDER: We have changed the backup format for Windows 10 Mobile devices to reduce the size of the backup stored in OneDrive. We will stop noting this going forward.

All right, that’s all for now. Have an excellent week, team.

Keep hustling,

Dona <3

Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.682 rolling out to devices not eligible for the Anniversary Update.
If you're someone using a Windows phone device that doesn't have access to the Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update, we have some odd news for you. Microsoft has just released a new build for those who don't have access to the Anniversary Update, build 10586.682 is rolling out to devices on Threshold 2 now.
We're not entirely sure why Microsoft has decided to roll out a new build for those older devices or devices that are yet to receive the Anniversary Update, as there has not been an official announcement just yet. This update, much like most other cumulative updates, will likely feature mostly under the hood changes and bug fixes rather than new features.

This update is somewhat beneficial to those who "forced" Windows 10 Mobile on older devices like the Lumia 920 and Lumia 1020. If you're using an older device on 10586, you are also receiving this update. For those curious, build 10586.682 was compiled on November 8th. Devices eligible or already running the Anniversary Update will not receive this update.
