Announcing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10586
By Gabe Aul / Corporate Vice President, Engineering Systems Team

Hi everyone,

Today we are releasing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10586 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. This build for mobile has a lots of good bug fixes and general improvements for you to check out. Overall this is a really great build, and we’re excited to get it out there for all of you to try. There is an important note for anyone who installed Build 10581 and then subsequently factory reset your phone, so please make sure to check out the known issues below.

Here are some things we have fixed:

*We have fixed the issue that caused the Start experience to become corrupted (garbled) after upgrading and restoring a backup from a phone that had a different resolution.
*You should now be able to set your default save locations via Settings > System > Storage and it will correctly reflect the current storage settings. Your SD card should no longer show up as a garbled name in Storage settings either.
*Moving apps to a SD card should no longer cause those apps to crash.
*We’ve made improvements to the Messaging + Skype app – through both app updates via the Store and also on the server side.
*This should be seeing less resuming/loading text when switching apps.
*The physical camera button should be working again if it wasn’t working for you before.
*Apps and games should download from the Store more reliably.

Known issues:

*After we released Build 10581 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring, we discovered a bug in the build that will cause the filesystem to become partially corrupted after doing a factory reset. For those of you who did a factory reset of your phone, you most likely did not notice this issue on Build 10581. Due to this bug however, upgrading to Build 10586 will cause your phone to go into a reboot loop after the upgrade completes – rebooting at the Windows or operator logo. To recover your phone, you can use the hardware key combination to reset your phone which will then put it at the OOBE experience on Build 10586. We highly recommend that you make sure you do a backup your phone *before* upgrading to Build 10586 due to this bug. Additionally, you can also recover your phone by using the Windows Device Recovery Tool to go back to Windows Phone 8.1 and then upgrade to Build 10586.
*Deploying Silverlight apps through Visual Studio to your phone still won’t work in this build. This issue will be fixed with the release of Visual Studio 2015 Update 1 on Nov. 30th. You can deploy UWP apps to your phone without any issues.
*There is a known issue where the tile for Insider Hub still remains under All apps but doesn’t open. Insider Hub isn’t included in this build. There isn’t a way to get it back unfortunately. However, it’ll return in a future flight! In the meantime, use Insider Hub on the PC as a workaround.

As always, please use the Windows Feedback app to send us any problem reports or suggestions for this build.

Thanks for being a Windows Insider,
g

Announcing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10586.29
By Gabe Aul / Corporate Vice President, Engineering Systems Team

Hi everyone,

I wanted to give you an update on what to expect with Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview builds over the next few weeks and into next year.

As our partners and Microsoft ship new Windows 10 mobile devices and existing devices are upgraded to Windows 10, all of our users will start to see more updates coming through Windows Update. These will be addressing feedback we receive from our Windows Insiders and new Windows 10 users.

We have received a lot of useful feedback from our Insiders on our last Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview build 10586. While this is the same base build that we are shipping with new Windows 10 devices, we are continuing to address feedback on the upgrade experience from Windows Phone 8.1 as reported from Windows Insiders.

Today we are releasing our first Cumulative Update to the Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10586 to Insiders that begins addressing this feedback. The first thing you will notice with this Cumulative Update is it will use the minor version for differentiating between each version as these builds only contain fixes to the Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview build already in the Fast and Slow rings. So this build will appear as 10586.29.

We are also taking this opportunity to onboard some new devices in the Windows Insider Program to receive these updates. These devices will be added early next week, along with an update to the Windows Device Recovery Tool that resolves detection issues on these devices.

Additional devices available to Windows Insiders early next week:

*LG Lancet
*Microsoft Lumia 550
*Microsoft Lumia 950
*Microsoft Lumia 950 XL

Feedback we have addressed includes:

*You will see additional improvements in upgrade experience, including devices with limited free space, map rendering on update, and RCS enabled device settings.
*Improved application backwards compatibility for Windows Phone 8.1 Silverlight applications.
*Edge performance and stability has been improved. Auto-completion has been updated to allow user to more easily edit the end of the URL in the address bar.
*Additional Bluetooth stability improvements.
*We have resolve issues on switching the active cellular connectivity profile on Dual SIM devices.
*Data profiles are now correctly restored in the out of box experience that would prevent some devices from sending or receiving MMS messages.

As always please keep sending on your feedback.

Thanks,
g

Announcing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10586.36
By Gabe Aul / Corporate Vice President, Engineering Systems Team

Hi everyone,

We have another Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10586 which we’re releasing today to Windows Insiders in the Fast and Slow ring.

This build continues to address feedback we’ve received from Windows Insiders as well as customers using our brand new Windows 10 phones like the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. As with the previous release, this Cumulative Update continues to use the minor version for differentiating between each version – so this build will appear as 10586.36.

Windows Insiders have provided great feedback on the upgrade experience from Windows Phone 8.1. We continue to use the feedback we get from Windows Insiders to improve the upgrade experience and this update has some improvements to that experience.

Going forward, we won’t be publishing blog posts to announce new Cumulative Updates for Windows Insiders to test. Instead, we’ll publish these announcements in the Insider Hub so please check there for news. If you follow me on Twitter I’ll keep sharing news there as well.

Flighting over the holidays

I also want to set expectations for new builds for both PC and mobile between now and the end of 2015. This time of year many of us take the opportunity to spend time with family and take some vacation time, so the engineering team will be running at a slower pace and many of our key people who drive our flighting process will be out (including me :) ) This means we won’t be releasing any new builds to Windows Insiders until January, for both PC and mobile.

Please keep sending us feedback using the Windows Feedback app.

Thanks,
g

I have Win10 Mobile in Lumia 550 which I got at work in December. It was also in Lumia 950XL which my boss got in last days of November.

Standard retail versions available without issues in official Polish distribution. I thought there are no issues with availability as Lumia 550/950 are in stores for like 2 months now. Problems can be with update from 8.1 to 10 on older phones. At least we have mainly Lumia 535 and 640 at work and there are no updates to Win 10 available yet.

Re: Firmware Updates

FYI...

Full steps to complete this process are as follows:

1 -- Open the Windows Insider application on your device
2 -- Select “Get preview builds”
- There will now be three options to choose from: Insider Fast, Insider Slow, and Production
3 -- Select “Production”

1.png

4 -- Read the presented message and tap “accept” to confirm your selection

2.png

5 -- Your device may prompt to reboot. If not, complete a manual reboot.
6 -- After the reboot, check for updates. If available, your device will display an update to receive the newest firmware.
- Settings > Updates & security > Phone update > (check for updates)
- If the device shows a “no updates available” message, your device has the most recently available firmware
7 -- If available, complete the update by following the on-screen directions
8 -- Once installed, re-open the Windows Insider application
9 -- Select your desired update ring (Insider Fast or Insider Slow) and reboot as prompted
10 -- Your device now has the newest firmware available and is set to receive the next flight when launched for your selected ring

Note: It is worth reiterating: while some devices have a firmware update available in select countries or on particular mobile operator network, other device variants may receive firmware updates at a later time.

Announcing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10586.71

By Gabe Aul / Corporate Vice President, Engineering Systems Team

Hi everyone,

We have another Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10586 which we’re releasing today to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring, Build 10586.71. This Cumulative Update contains additional bug fixes outlined below. Windows Insiders in the Fast ring will also notice an Insider Fast Configuration Update that will update an expiring certificate to ensure your device will continue to receive future flights.

We have been working on addressing Windows Insider feedback of the update experience and today many Insiders will get to try out these fixes. Windows Insiders that downloaded the Configuration Update that was published on Friday, or has a device that was automatically updated over the weekend, will experience improvements in the performance and reliability of receiving this Cumulative Update. But don’t worry if you have not yet downloaded the Configuration Update to your device, it will be included in the download with this update.

We have continued to address feedback we receive on Windows 10 Mobile as well as the upgrade experience from Windows Phone 8.1. In some cases, these improvements will only be seen when upgrading from Windows Phone 8.1 such as improvements in cellular and Wi-Fi data profile migration or the availability of SensorCore API’s.

Give this update a try and as always keep sending your feedback!

Fixes include:

*Windows Update performance and reliability improvements

*Improvements in migration of data profiles and messaging settings when upgraded from Windows Phone 8.1.

*SensorCore API’s are now upgraded correctly from Windows Phone 8.1; allowing applications, including many fitness applications, to correctly access movement data.

*SD card detection has been improved on boot and after insertion; File Explorer now handles the removal of an SD card when the default for apps or photos are set to SD.

*Improvements in the Edge browser, including PDF rendering.

*Bluetooth improvements when re-connecting to already paired devices and cars; turn by turn directions, and when using Cortana with the Microsoft Band.

*Improvements in Settings when downloading Maps or changing Quick Settings.

*Reinstalling Groove Music from the Windows Store no longer causes DRM music playback issues. Groove Music local song collections are now more quickly imported within the application

*Device power improvements after listening to music, after missed phone calls when iris detection is disabled, and when downloading updates.

*In app purchases now work correctly when cellular data is disabled.

*Improvements to the reliability of Kids Corner.

Thanks,
g

Announcing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10586.107
By Gabe Aul / Corporate Vice President, Engineering Systems Team

Hi everyone,

Today we are sending out another Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10586 which we are releasing today to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring, Build 10586.107. This update includes some additional fixes:

*Fixed an issue where in some cases a device could be missing tiles on the Start screen after going through the device out of box experience.
*Improved support in Narrator to speak in multiple languages.
*Improvements to the device reset experience when BitLocker\Device Encryption is enabled by enterprise policy or by the user.

Introducing the Release Preview Ring:

Today we are introducing a new ring named the Windows Insider Release Preview ring for both PC and mobile. The Release Preview ring will focus on Insiders that want to stay on the Current Branch (currently builds based off of 10586), but continue to receive early access to updates, application updates, and driver updates.

The 3 Windows Insider rings are:

Fast – Best for Insiders who enjoy being the first to get access to builds and feature updates, with some risk to their devices in order to identify issues, and provide suggestions and ideas to make Windows software and devices great.

Slow – Best for Insiders who enjoy getting early access to builds and feature updates, with less risk to their devices, and still want to provide feedback to make Windows software and devices great.

Release Preview – Best for Insiders who enjoy getting early access to updates for the Current Branch, Microsoft applications, and drivers, with minimal risk to their devices, and still want to provide feedback to make Windows devices great.

For more details on branches and our rings, check out one the first post in our new series called ‘Inside WDG’ here in Insider Hub.

Thanks,
g

Preview Build 14267

February 19, 2016 2:01 pm
Announcing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 14267
By Gabe Aul / Corporate Vice President, Engineering Systems Team

Hi everyone,

Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 14267 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. While we have been releasing preview builds for PC from our development branch for a while now, this is our first new preview build for Windows 10 Mobile from our Development Branch this year. As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, initially we’ll make new builds from our Development Branch available only to devices that shipped with Windows 10 Mobile. Currently this includes the Lumia 950, 950 XL, 650, 550, and Xiaomi Mi4. We plan to expand from there as we release Windows 10 Mobile to other devices.

Just to quickly recap the changes we’ve made to rings for Insiders in 2016: (I included this in yesterday’s PC build, but including here for Mobile for completeness):

We introduced the new Release Preview ring last week which is for Windows Insiders who want to stay on the Current Branch (currently builds based off of Build 10586), but continue to receive early access to updates, application updates, and driver updates. This is a great option for people who want to get updates early but not go all the way to installing full preview builds. Because the Release Preview ring offers updates to the Current Branch, it is only visible to devices on the Current Branch (Build 10586). If you are on a newer build, flights to the Release Preview ring won’t be applicable to that device. The easiest way to go between the Development Branch to the Current Branch on your phone is to use the Windows Device Recovery Tool for phone to reinstall Windows 10 Mobile.
We’ve adjusted the criteria we use to release new builds to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring to get builds out more quickly – this means these builds may include more bugs and other issues that could be slightly more painful to live with. This applies to mobile builds just like it does for PC builds. So if you’d like to change your ring – open the Windows Insider app > tap on “Get preview builds” > Choose the Slow ring.

Here’s what’s new

Search for music easier in Cortana: We have made it easier to invoke music search in Cortana by adding a music search icon to the top right of Cortana. You can now open Cortana and tap on the music search icon to have Cortana listen and search for the song that’s playing.

1.png

Word Flow now works in the address bar in Microsoft Edge on your phone: For fans of Word Flow, we heard your feedback, and we have re-enabled the ability to use shape writing in the address bar in Microsoft Edge on your phone!

Open InPrivate tabs more easily in Microsoft Edge on your phone: We take the need for private browsing seriously, and InPrivate has been a feature of Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 Mobile from day one. However, we received feedback from Windows Insiders that the InPrivate feature was either hard to find or missing on their phones. As a result, we’ve moved the button to create a new InPrivate tab to appear right next to the new tab button. The next time you need a private tab in Microsoft Edge, you’ll find it right in your tabs view. Try it out on your phone and let us know what you think.

2.png

Improved Download Prompts in Microsoft Edge: Microsoft Edge will now show a prompt when you start a download, allowing you to cancel unwanted downloads.

Messaging + Skype improvements: You can now attach photos to your Skype messages by tapping on the paperclip icon at the lower left as you’re composing a new Skype message to a contact. Additionally, you can also invoke the Camera app to take a photo to attach to your Skype message too or send along your location.

Here’s what’s fixed

*We fixed an issue where shape writing would ignore every second word when typing into a text box on a website in Microsoft Edge.
*After installing the Polish keyboard, typing a word that should be accented now offers the recommended accented word. For example – if you type the word “milosc” it should properly autocorrect to “miłość”.
*We have resolved an issue where you could not hide the navigation bar in Windows Phone 8.1 apps like WhatsApp, Twitter, Weibo, Flixster and others.
*We fixed an issue where videos recorded onto SD memory cards would result in a large number of dropped frames.
*There should be improved app launch reliability and certain crashes that were causing the phone to reboot are also fixed.
*We’ve polished the Live tile animations and improved the logic for refreshing Live tiles.
*We’ve made reliability improvements for keyboards with large dictionaries such as the Hinglish keyboard.

Known issues

Visual Voicemail notification and delivery is not working in this build; causing devices to not receive any new visual voicemails. You can manually check your voicemail by calling your voicemail to listen to any new messages. You can call your voicemail within the Phone app by clicking “…” > Settings > “Change more settings for Phone” > “Call voicemail”; this will also leave the Voicemail call in your history to make checking voicemail easier.
ADDED 2/20 – Several Windows Insiders with a Lumia 550 have reported an issue where their phone no longer charges or connects via USB after upgrading to Build 14267. If you have a Lumia 550, we recommend holding off going to this build. If you have hit this issue we recommend rolling back to Build 10586 using the Windows Device Recovery Tool. You will need to connect your phone to your PC via USB first, open the Windows Device Recovery Tool and choose “My device was not detected”, choose “Lumia” and turn off your phone and let it reboot in order for the Windows Device Recovery Tool to detect your phone and reinstall. If you need to download the image, your phone may reboot back into the OS, once the image finishing downloading completely – reboot your phone again and it should begin reinstalling Windows 10 Mobile. If your Lumia 550 is really low on battery, switch your phone into flashing mode by turning your phone off first and press power button and then volume up until you see a lightning bolt on your phone’s screen. This will allow your Lumia 550 to charge. You should let it charge a bit before using the Windows Device Recovery Tool to roll back to Build 10586.

As always – thank you for being Windows Insiders and make sure to send us feedback on any issues you run into with this build in the Windows Feedback app.

Thanks,
g

Preview Build 14267.1004

February 24, 2016 10:01 am

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14271 + Mobile Build 14267.1004
By Gabe Aul / Corporate Vice President, Engineering Systems Team

Hi everyone,

Today, we are releasing Build 14271 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. We’re also releasing Build 14267.1004 for mobile to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. This will be the first time we release builds for PC and mobile on the same day and at the same time. For PC, Build 14271 brings a lot of improvements and bug fixes that are based on feedback we have received from Windows Insiders.

Getting feedback is an integral part of the Windows Insider Program. After each build upgrade or after certain activities, Windows will often ask for feedback. The answers to these questions is used by our engineering teams to understand how Windows Insiders feel about a particular experience or a particular build. Starting with Build 14271 and newer, the frequency in which Windows will ask for your feedback will be locked to “Automatically (Recommended)” in the Settings app and managed by the Windows Insider Program. If having the ability to change this setting is important to you – you can roll back to the Windows 10 November Update (the latest build or future builds in our Current Branch) and disable Windows 10 Insider Preview builds on that device. You will then be able to change this setting. While we don’t require Windows Insiders to answer these questions, we do hope they take the time to answer them so that we can better improve Windows for our customers.

Here’s what’s fixed for PC

We fixed an issue where the window borders on apps would change from accent color to black after every upgrade to a new build.
We have updated the music control icons that are shown in taskbar previews in music apps like Groove to look more crisp and clean at higher resolutions.
We fixed an issue where the taskbar would sometimes not auto-hide and show unexpectedly on top of full screen windows such as showing above a PowerPoint presentation when in slideshow mode.
We fixed an issue where the “Hide notifications while presenting” setting preference is lost after upgrading to a new build.
The entire app header in Action Center is now right-clickable instead of just the app name or “x”.
We made it easier to dismiss all notifications from a specific app in Action Center by increasing the target area to encompass the entire app header.
We fixed an issue where interaction notifications would not show a button to input text in some cases.
Fast user switching should work now with Picture Password.
We fixed an issue where some desktop (Win32) apps look missing from Start.
We fixed an issue where the accent color does not automatically change when the slideshow option is chosen for your desktop background.

Also – for developers, the debugging tools for Windows (Windbg, kd, cdb, ntsd) now have improved support for universal app debugging. This update also requires the Universal C Runtime Library (uCRT), which is available via Windows Update. KB and MSDN documentation will be available within a few weeks. For more information, see this Building Apps for Windows blog post.
Known issues for PC

We are tracking an issue reported by Insiders where some PCs will freeze or bluescreen when resuming from hibernation. Disabling hibernation is a workaround in some cases until this is fixed.
If you have Kaspersky Anti-Virus, Internet Security, or the Kaspersky Total Security Suite installed on your PC there is a known driver bug that prevents these programs from working as expected in builds from the Development Branch. We are partnering with Kaspersky to fix this issue for a future release, but at this time there are no known workarounds. While this issue is present, we recommend using Windows Defender or another third party anti-virus product of your choice to remain protected.
Turning on the “always show all icons in the notification area” setting disrupts the layout of the notification area (“systray”).
When browsing in Microsoft Edge, charts displayed using D3.js library will not display correctly – e.g. render as black, positioned incorrectly. Known affected sites are Cortana, Bing.com, and PowerBI.com.

Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 14267.1004

Build 14267.1004 is the same build we released on Friday but with two very important fixes and one new feature:

*We fixed the issue reported by Insiders in Build 14267 where the Lumia 550 no longer charges or connects via USB. If you hit this issue on your Lumia 550 – we have laid out guidance on various methods to get back into a good state here.
*We fixed the issue preventing Visual Voicemail notifications from happening.
*We’re introducing Visual Voicemail for dual-SIM devices such as dual-SIM Lumia 950 XL! Work for this feature was in Friday’s release but due to the above mentioned bug impacting notifications it was not working correctly. But now the experience should be working as expected.
*We’ve released an update to the People app that brings back the history feature. For a given contact you communicate with, you can view the interaction, whether by today, yesterday, last week etc. Right now, your Skype messages won’t show up in history yet but we’re working on enabling this in a future update. Also – we’re tracking a bug in which opening an email item in history might not take you to that specific email.

We also have some additional known issues we’d like to note:

*If you have the Windows Feedback app pinned to Start, after upgrading from Build 10586.107 it will no longer show as pinned.
*We are seeing reports from Windows Insiders of issues connecting to wireless displays. We’re investigating.
*When using Continuum on the Lumia 950 XL – the trackpad experience is not working correctly.

As a reminder, we are initially making new mobile builds from our Development Branch available only to devices that shipped with Windows 10 Mobile. Currently this includes the Lumia 950, 950 XL, 650, 550, and Xiaomi Mi4. Today we are also adding support for the ALCATEL ONETOUCH Fierce XL. We plan to expand to other devices once we start releasing Windows 10 Mobile to other devices. If you are a Windows Insider on a device not mentioned above, you can stay in the Fast ring and sit tight until we expand to other devices or go back to Build 10586 and switch to the Release Preview Ring to continue helping us test Cumulative Updates. For more information about our rings and branches, I highly recommend reading this post here in Insider Hub.

As always – thank you for being Windows Insiders and make sure to send us feedback on any issues you run into with these builds in the Windows Feedback app.

Thanks,
g

Preview Build 14283

March 10, 2016 10:00 am

Announcing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 14283
By Gabe Aul / Corporate Vice President, Engineering Systems Team

Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 14283 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring.

As a reminder, we are initially making new mobile builds from our Development Branch available only to devices that shipped with Windows 10 Mobile. Currently this includes the Lumia 950, 950 XL, 650, 550, Xiaomi Mi4, and ALCATEL ONETOUCH Fierce XL.

For this build, we have some new things for you to check out and a lot of good improvements and fixes that Insiders will enjoy on their devices.

Here’s what’s new in Build 14283

Improvements to the Phone app: We know how important it is to stay informed when someone is trying to reach you, whether that’s through notifications, Live tiles on your Start screen, or directly within your communications applications. To help with this, we’ve added missed call and voicemail waiting indicators to the tabs inside the Phone app. Once you navigate to a tab with a missed call or voicemail – the indicator goes away. We’ve got another change coming that will keep the indicator in place until you navigate away from the tab. There is also a bug where you might not see the indicator clear right away – a fix is coming soon for this as well. Let us know what you think!

1.png

Updates to Outlook Mail & Calendar: Yesterday, we released an update to the Outlook Mail & Calendar apps that introduces some new features and improvements. In Outlook Mail, you can turn off the message preview text in the message list (Settings > Reading > Conversation and turning “Show preview text” off). You can also quickly get rid of junk email in your inbox by pressing down on a message to bring up the context menu and choosing ‘Move to Junk’. In Outlook Calendar, you can now let others know “I’ll be late” directly from meeting notifications.

2.png

Coming Soon – the Feedback Hub: When you open Insider Hub on this build, you will see a new welcome dialog for Feedback Hub. Coming in the next mobile and PC build – we are bringing together the Insider Hub and Windows Feedback apps into a single app called the Feedback Hub. The Feedback Hub carries over all of the best things from the previous two apps plus some new things Insiders will enjoy. For example, in addition to upvoting feedback, you will be able to also leave comments on feedback. We have also redesigned the homepage in Feedback Hub to bring together announcements and quests. Stay tuned as we’ll have more to say about the Feedback Hub with the next builds for mobile and PC when the app is ready for Insiders to use.

Here’s what’s fixed

We have addressed an issue where the background behind the All apps list would not have an overlay (causing it to appear too bright or too dark, depending on your background) if you went back to All apps list after launching an app.
We fixed an issue causing the title of a song in volume control to flicker a few times when you pressed play or changed tracks after a pause.
We fixed an issue some users were experiencing with Build 14267 where your device could hang while typing and reboot.
We made some more improvements to the Live tile refresh logic. First, if there are pending notifications for several Live tiles, we will now update them in one quick sweep across the Start screen rather than one at a time. Second, if a Live tile has both badge and content updates, they will now appear at the same time. Finally, apps will now launch faster from the Start screen if there are incoming Live tile updates at the same time.
We fixed an issue where Live tiles for certain apps (such as the Weather app) would sometimes unexpectedly be cleared of active notifications.
We fixed an issue in which the Start screen background would appear to stutter behind the tiles when scrolling up and down the Start screen on some devices such as the Lumia 950.
We fixed an issue where the keyboard would sometimes pop up when swiping over to the All apps list.
We fixed an issue where icons for certain apps would appear too tiny on Live folders on the Start screen if your phone was set to 350% DPI.
We fixed an issue where “More notifications” message in Action Center was not properly formatted.
We fixed an issue where for certain languages, pressing “@” button could result the contents of the clipboard being pasted.
We fixed an issue where notifications using custom sounds would be silent if the underlying audio file had been deleted. Now, if that file is not present, it will play the default notification sound.
Connected to wireless displays should now work by going to Action Center and expanding Quick actions and choosing “Connect”.

Known issues

We have updated the Bluetooth AVRCP profile on mobile to version 1.5. Some cars only tell Windows what they support and vice versa during the initial pairing ceremony. In order for this update to take full effect, you need to delete your existing Bluetooth pairing with your car and then re-pair. After doing so, if you notice any issues using media playback controls or missing artist or track info, please file a new feedback item including your car’s make, model, and year.
If you have a Microsoft Band 1 or 2 paired to your phone, it will no longer sync after updating to this build due to a system API failure that occurs after the update. If you want to get your Band syncing with your phone again – you can temporarily change the language of your phone as a short term workaround until we release a fix. Additionally, you can also choose to reset your phone to get out of this state – however you may experience this update issue again with the next build until we fix this issue. This issue may also impact Skype video and audio calls.
We are investigating an issue where the Gadgets app is not able to detect the Microsoft Display Dock on phones running Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview builds, and thus cannot update the firmware version. If you have a dock which has already been updated to version 4 then this will not affect you. If you have a dock that has not been updated, then you may experience some minor issues with USB-C stability.
Connectivity to older Wi-Fi networks using the WEP encryption security method may be broken. WEP is an insecure method for protecting your Wi-Fi connection but a small percentage of Windows users still use it. A workaround would be to configure your wireless routers to use WPA or WPA2 or wait for the next Insider flight when this is fixed.

As always – thank you for being Windows Insiders and make sure to send us feedback on any issues you run into with these builds in the Windows Feedback app.

Thanks,
g

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14291 for PC and Mobile
By Gabe Aul / Corporate Vice President, Engineering Systems Team

Hi everyone,

Today we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14291 for both PC and Mobile to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. There are some very cool new things in this build, including one of the top requested features by Windows Insiders – extensions for Microsoft Edge!

Earlier today, we began the roll-out of Windows 10 Mobile to select Windows 8.1 phones. As we stated previously, devices which are eligible to receive Windows 10 will also be able to get preview builds from the Development Branch. We’ve already delivered a few builds to the devices which shipped with Windows 10, including the Lumia 550, 650, 950, 950 XL, Xiaomi Mi4, and Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL. We have updated the list of devices that will be capable of receiving updates as part of the Windows Insider Program going forward, and in the coming weeks we will deliver Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview builds from our Development Branch to these devices in the Fast ring.

Here’s what’s new in Build 14291

Extensions in Microsoft Edge: Today we are very excited to introduce extensions for Microsoft Edge. To try out an extension, just click on “More” (…) at the top right in Microsoft Edge and click “Extensions” to open the Extensions pane and click “Get extensions”. You can try out the Mouse Gestures, Microsoft Translator and Reddit Enhancement Suite extensions today with more on the way. Extensions are only available on PC. For more information on extensions for Microsoft Edge, check out this blog post from Drew.

Pinned Tabs in Microsoft Edge: Microsoft Edge now lets you pin tabs, making it super easy to keep your most-used sites and web apps always available. To pin a tab, right-click on the tab you want to pin and choose “Pin tab”. To unpin a tab, right-click on the pinned tab you want to unpin and choose “Unpin tab”. Pinned tabs always appear at the start of the tab row, and only showing the site’s favicon. Pinned tabs don’t show a close button, so you won’t accidentally close them. Pinned tabs that are in your Microsoft Edge window when you close the app will come back the next time you open Microsoft Edge.

Other Microsoft Edge Improvements: You can now copy any link into your clipboard, and right-click on the address bar in Microsoft Edge and choose “Paste and go” from the context menu. Microsoft Edge pastes the URL into the address bar, and navigates to the site. You can also copy words to your clipboard, and choose “Paste and search”.

We have also made it easier to close tabs in Microsoft Edge on your mobile device, especially on devices with a larger screen size by increasing the size of the close button for tabs on the Tabs page.

Updated Maps app: This build includes a updated Maps app for Windows 10 that brings a more lightweight, scalable, and consistent UI as well as underlying architecture improvements and new features for you to try!

*One-tap access to search and directions from anywhere, even on your phone. This is great especially for one-handed use.
*You can view multiple searches and directions at the same time, on the same map as they are layered on top of each other and you can use tabs or the map to switch between them.
*You can now minimize search results, directions, and location info to enjoy more of the map, while keeping them in easy reach.
*You can see labels for your search results directly on the map. No more numbers to match between the map and the list.
*Cortana will give you turn-by-turn directions (if Cortana is enabled).
*We have improved the logic for nearby searches so you should see better (closer) results.
*We have added the ability to search for your favorite city in the 3D cities list so no more scrolling forever to get to the city you want.
*You can now access your favorites offline and add notes to them.
*We have updated the turn-by-turn design to improve glanceability and landscape layout.

For more information on the updated Maps app for Windows 10 – check out this blog post from the Maps Team.

Updated Alarms & Clock app: We have pushed out an update to the Alarm & Clock app that introduces a new inline time picker and improved design for creating and editing alarms and timers.

Japanese one-handed kana touch keyboard: You can now choose one-handed kana touch keyboard for Japanese text typing. Type text in the same familiar way you would on your mobile device. One-handed keyboard is smaller than full-size touch keyboard, so it doesn’t hide your desktop too much. It can also be placed anywhere on the desktop. If you want to type with left hand, bring one-handed touch keyboard to the left side.

Japanese Lined-mode Text Input Canvas: Now, you can have a new experience with the Japanese lined-mode Text Input Canvas. It provides you natural and intuitive text input for people who enter Japanese text. Edit the written characters, such as striking out inked text and modifying characters, can be easily done with a pen.

Introducing Feedback Hub: As we announced last week, we are bringing together the Insider Hub and Windows Feedback apps into a single app called the Feedback Hub. And the Feedback Hub is now available in this build for both PC and Mobile. The Feedback Hub carries over all of the best things from the previous two apps plus a few new things. When you open Feedback Hub for the first time, you will see a search box at the top so you can quickly find and upvote feedback items from other Insiders or submit new feedback. You will also notice that Announcements and Quests show up together in a single feed under “What’s new”. When you submit new feedback to us, we have added a new description field so you can explain in more detail the feedback you are sending to us. The most helpful feedback for us includes a brief title that summarizes your feedback, then you can use the new description field to provide more detail, for example: the steps that an engineer could take to recreate a problem, or more information about a feature suggestion. And you’ll start seeing Microsoft engineers leaving comments on your feedback too! The familiar experience for browsing feedback is still a click away, just navigate to the Feedback tab from the left-hand navigation menu. We’re just starting to add capability to the new unified app and we’re excited to take this first step. We’re excited to hear what you think of the new Feedback Hub, go to Apps and Games > Feedback Hub and tell us what you think.

Here are a few known issues for Feedback Hub to take note of:

*We have a bug where the Feedback Hub will crash right after submitting feedback if you launched Feedback Hub using the hardware shortcuts for opening the app (VOL+POWER DOWN on mobile, Windows key + Shift + ? on PC). Don’t worry – we’re fixing this in the next flight, and your feedback is successfully submitted.
*If you have previously pinned the Windows Feedback app to Start, you will notice it remains as a “dead tile”. We are fixing this in future builds. You can unpin and re-pin the new Feedback Hub app to Start.
*We have removed the screenshot capture feature and instead allow you to upload screenshots via the upload screenshot button. Hint: use VOL + POWER UP on mobile to take a screenshot, and on PC use Windows key + Print screen.

Here’s what’s fixed for PC

*This issue causing the notification area (“systray”) to look out of alignment when turning on the “always show all icons in the notification area” should now be fixed.
*We fixed the issue where connectivity to older Wi-Fi networks using the WEP encryption security method may be broken.
*We fixed an issue where the “X” to close the “Find of Page” toolbar in Microsoft Edge is displayed off screen on 8-inch devices when in portrait mode.
*We fixed an issue where the USB icon in the notification area was reverting to the old icon when ejecting drives.
*We fixed an issue where clicking the suggested search in Microsoft Edge resulted in a URL to the search as the search string.

Here’s what’s fixed for Mobile

*We fixed the issue where connectivity to older Wi-Fi networks using the WEP encryption security method may be broken.
*We fixed an issue resulting in slower text input speed the more words were typed.
*We have improved Word Flow recognition of longer words.
*The All apps list has been updated to now follow the “Make Text Larger” ease of access setting.
*We fixed an issue where Settings would sometimes list unresolved app names under Extras.
*We fixed an issue where touch targets could be out of alignment in the Photos picker.

Known issues for PC

*We continue to investigate an issue in which some Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4, and Surface Book devices experience a freeze or hang and all input such as keyboard/trackpad and touch do not work. The workaround is to hold down the power button to force the device to hard-reboot.
*our PC may freeze when plugging in an Xbox One or Xbox 360 controller and other gamepads in this build.
*If you use Hyper-V and have a Virtual Switch configured for your network adapter, you may see an error indicator (red-colored “X”) for your network adapter in the notification area of your taskbar. The error indicator is incorrect and your network adapter should continue to work just fine.
*We are seeing reports of some apps such as QQ crashing. We are currently investigating, and this bug may also impact older apps such as Windows Live Mail and Expression Encoder 4.
*If you have Kaspersky Anti-Virus, Internet Security, or the Kaspersky Total Security Suite installed on your PC there is a known driver bug that prevents these programs from working as expected in builds from the Development Branch. We are partnering with Kaspersky to fix this issue for a future release, but at this time there are no known workarounds. While this issue is present, we recommend using Windows Defender or another third party anti-virus product of your choice to remain protected.

Known issues for Mobile

*If you reset your phone on this build (Build 14291) and restore your phone from a backup, restore will fail to install apps from your backup’s apps list leaving blank grey titles on Start. If you delete the grey tiles and attempt to reinstall the same apps from the Store, you will not get app data restored. The next backup will over-write the app backup data as well. To avoid hitting this bug, avoid resetting your phone on this build. If for some reason you do need to reset your device on this build, don’t restore your phone from a backup and you should turn off backup for apps and OS data to avoid creating a corrupt backup via Settings > Update & Security > Backup.
*If you have a Microsoft Band 1 or 2 paired to your phone, it will no longer sync after updating to this build due to a system API failure that occurs after the update.
*The Gadgets app will not detect the Microsoft Display Dock on phones running Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview builds, and thus cannot update the firmware version. If you have a dock which has already been updated to version 4 then this will not affect you. If you have a dock that has not been updated, then you may experience some minor issues with USB-C stability. You will still be able to use your dock and Continuum.
*There is a new option under Settings > Update & security for Windows Insider Program. This is a work-in-progress option to improve managing your Windows Insider Program settings on your device. Right now, if you go to this option it crashes the Settings app. Please continue to use the Windows Insider app to manage your settings for now.

As always – thank you for being Windows Insiders and make sure to send us feedback on any issues you run into with these builds in the Feedback Hub.

Thanks,
g
