A much needed upgrade

You're going to recommend to everyone to wait 6mo or more before buying aren't you?

SLI 680's don't even come close to what a single 980 can do. Even 3x of them would be hard pressed to match a 980 in most titles, especially at his resolution.
And a 980Ti is even a good jump from that.

I would say it's 100% worth it to upgrade now.

Huh???? Are you serious? Is the 980Ti really that much better? That's crazy! I will be upgrading the cards at some point but it's definitely down the road for right now. So what board would you choose from the two listed? I'm leaning towards the Asus right now.....

Asus X99-Pro/USB 3.1

EVGA X99 FTW

Neither would be my first choice, as I mentioned earlier in the thread, but look at the comparison here:

Pick the one that fits your features needs better, as they're very different from one another.

As for the GPU's, the resolution you'll be running is a higher pixel count than 4K.
The 680/770 simply doesn't scale well over a single 1440p because the bus chokes it out.
The 980/980Ti have a MUCH better bus arrangement, along with new data compression technology to use that larger bus more efficiently.

take atms word for it, i game some with a 770 at 1440p, it strugles here and there in single with a single screen.

you bet! Its worth the wait so dylskee if you can wait til june/july 16 do so. Theyre gonna be far better gpus than the maxwells (900 series)

Yes, Pascal will be new and shiny.
No, we don't know specifics about performance yet.
No, we don't have a firm release date (remember how long Maxwell took to launch after the initial speculation).
No, we know nothing of price yet.

The rumor has been mid 2016, but that is typically referring to Q3. That could mean any time from July to September.

I do take his word for it, he seems to be very knowledgeable and helpful so I listen.

Patience isn't my strong point! :) I'd be happy with a couple 980ti so when funds allow I'll go that route.

I appreciate seeing that :)
If you have any other questions just post them up, I should see it!

pascal, he needs a compute unit?

Pascal should be both a Quadro and Geforce release, much like Fermi/Kepler/Maxwell etc.

Just for clarification I run the cards in SLI but only use one monitor while gaming, I tried running surround but that was not possible. If I go with the board you suggested will I see a CPU performance hit while running 3 cards in SLI? I don't understand how that works, but the description says a 40 lane CPU is needed to run triple cards.

That was just the generic link, can you post either your saved link or the permalink?

Not nearly enough CPU cooler for that chip. Other than that, solid!

Oh really, chip runs hot? I will find a better cooler then. Thanks for the input, greatly appreciated!

It's just that the cooler is meh at best and the CPU is 140W stock.
What case will you be using?
