How Much Energy Does Your Farm Consume? :)

lightning bolt sm.png

Team 32, what gear is in your farm and how much electricity does it consume?
I'm trying to calculate the average energy consumption for 1mil PPD with a folding farm, not including cooling (A/C).

Example: 4x R9 290x GPUs generate (about) ~1mil PPD, with each GPU consuming ~300w
That's roughly ~1,200w or 28.8 kWh/day or 864 kWh/month for 1mil PPD

Any feedback would be appreciated, and thank you in advance. :)

I like the idea of this thread!

On a side note though, you can figure that out yourself if you know what cards you plan on using as their board power/TDP of each card are known values as well as their PPD.

For example, if you use a 970, we know the TDP/board power is 150W and you can do the math from there. :)

:)

Agreed, it can be calculated based on the hardware but I was curious as to what real-world farms are drawing based on their PPD. Trying to figure out my 12-month strategy.

2 dual E5 2692v2's pull about 280w each for around 160k PPD each, a GTX 970 running in a Z9PE with an E5-2665 (single cpu and HT disabled) pulls 225-240w from the wall for ~260k PPD.

So that's ~580k PPD for 800w.

I'm UK based so 240v power - slightly better efficiency and 80+ Gold PSU's at a minimum - and most importantly, no air con to cool the rigs that's a huge cost for those that have it

My farm is in my sig. I can connect my *something*watt device. I've got it stored away some where. When it is running at full speed (which it never is) its about 1 mill ppd.

ubuntu 14.04, driver 346.xx on Maxwell, 304.125 on Kepler,
factory oc gpu with coolbits oc to 1350-1400 on GTX750Ti, 1450-1500 on GTX970.
cpu at defaults
gold and platinum psu,
gpu folding only, core 18 wu
readings with kill-a-watt meter, 120 volt

Well, I found my kill-o-watt and pluged it in. These are pictures from last night.

I'm certain that it was the fault of the power strip.

For the OP, I have no idea how much power I'm drawing. lol.

Ouch, you killed a Kill-O-Watt

That there does not look good!! Too much power from one outlet I would say. Funny the breaker didn't trip. Looks like Jmtyra saved your bacon!

I once had a UPS go on fire behind my TV stand. Fortunately I was right there, otherwise... yikes. I had another UPS
get so hot I couldn't touch its metal surface (nothing was plugged into it, I was only testing it). It was only by chance that I accidentally touched it and that was another disaster in the making. In short never trust electrical things, always check things are ok.

I just ordered all new replacement surge protectors for the entire house. I have all cheap power strips and its time to let them go. We already lost one home to fire. Not doing that again.

Additionally, I bought a nice 1U surge suppressor for my farm. 1800 watt 3840 jeules (sp) rack mount awesomeness.

YIKES!!!!!!

:chair:

Don, sorry to hear about that, I hope you (and your equipment) are OK. I've also had a bad experienced (or three!) with cheap surge protectors and gave up that habit. Never looked back and have been very happy knowing that my equipment doesn't want to kill me or itself. ;)

Thanks for trying and I hope the new surge devices arrive soon.

270 watts for the 7970, 150 watts for r9 270, and 135 watts for gtx 650 ti boost. Thats my little farm, also just values pulled from the web, i don't have a killawatt :)

Thank you for everyone's response on their folding farm power/ppd use, I appreciate your time and effort. This greatly helps me to better plan for my future "data center" in terms of power and cooling capacity.

Fold on!

:salute:

If I can find my ammeter, I can get exact numbers for my rig.

Assuming 250watts for the GTX780 SC and assuming 200 watts for my FX CPU I'm looking at 550 watts for 200K PPD.

I'll have another rig soon with my 270x and 7850. Those I already know actual wattage - with the 3570K that system will pull about 420watts to get another 185K PPD

So grand total when I finish the 2nd folding rig will be 970 watts. 385K PPD.

Wish I knew... Thankfully, I don't pay the bill. While everything is in flux at the moment, when the dust settles, I should have 162 quad core i5's in the farm. Still removing/upgrading a lot of dual core4/HT 1st gen i5's.

wow ark that should be enough to not have to run the heat in that place!!!

and that's what I do. I run all my folding during oct, dec, jan, feb maybe a month more or less. I did figure it up one time as to how much a month it cost. I don't figure it up anymore...
