Hello,

I thought of putting this into the processor forum but thought this might fit better. I am building a semi budget build computer for a family member. I don't really have a set budget but at the same time I want to keep the cost reasonable so I don't mind spending a little extra if I will see a decent gain for paying a little more. The main issue I am running into is which processor to go with. I don't want a "K" series chip. I also don't have access to a microcenter for those prices. I was interested to see what what i3 6320 was going to bring to the table but haven't seen it at retail yet and I assume it will run in the 149-159 range. I do see an i5 4460 on sale on newegg for 179.99 right now not a great discount but still something. I wanted opinions on what would be the best way to go. The computer will see some light-medium gaming such as world of tanks. I want to go intel for sure.

If I go skylake that brings the extra expense of DDR4 and slightly more expensive motherboards it seems. The Haswell will be cheaper on the MB and memory end of things and being an i5 should perform better overall I would think even with the slower clock and older design. Any insights opinions or other processor options would also be appreciated I was just hoping to get some more knowledge thrown my way to help in the decision making process.

id get an i5 over an i3 any day of the week.

4460 + gtx 960 would be admirable for world of tanks and the like.

Yeah I thought so, I've got an old 680 4gb card I am going to gift them since I just upgraded should perform pretty close to a 960. I would assume Z97 platform or one of the lower end equivalents due to no need to overclocked? Or is getting a deal on a z87 worth the hassle

If you can afford it, I would still go Skylake personally... the problem is waiting for a locked chip to be available I guess. That said, if you are not going to overclock, you do not need to worry about the very slight premium a Z170 fetches over Z97... you are going B/H150 in the first place (perhaps there are differences there too... but I don't know enough to compare.. this difference isn't much). DDR4 2800 really isn't much more expensive than 'sweet spot' DDR3 either.. maybe $10? Dont misunderstand me, they will be plenty happy with 4460 + 960 for 1080p gaming, but I would get the best you want to afford. Id do the math before you write off Skylake and see if the meager difference is 'worth it'.

Thinking just doing a 6500 and calling it a day no regrets or what ifs you are right that skylake isn't much more than haswell I guess the only question would be wait and see on the 6320 i3 3.9 chip or just get the i5 6500 for 40-60 more which in the long run isn't much more

Id get the quad, be it Skylake or Haswell, period.

Here is the difference in DDR4 'sweet spots':

2X4gb DDR4 2800 CL15 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...me=Desktop Memory&Order=BESTMATCH&isdeptsrh=1
2X4gb ddr3 2133 CL9 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...me=Desktop Memory&Order=BESTMATCH&isdeptsrh=1

Looks like a difference of $15 there.

Not sure how the CPUs compare like to like, but you are looking at less than a $50 difference between comparable choices. If you are really looking to save some coin, then go Haswell, but if the budget allows for such a difference, I say get Skylake. Choice is yours. :)

Admittedly ddr4 has tanked in price. (Awesome!) But for a pure budget, i5 Haswell would still be far superior to skylake i3 in many circumstances. By the time it's time to upgrade out of haswell, skylake will likely be as outdated. For mild gaming and budget, haswell should still reign king here. I know you preface with "if it's in the budget", but if it comes down to getting skylake and an inferior gpu or no ssd, haswell should be the way to go.

If I am using an H series motherboard any point in getting memory clocked higher than 2133

I don't believe it can overclock, but not 100% sure. I know on the b 150 board I have I cant.

$60 for the lowest common CL (13) for 2x4GB.
$100 B series gaming mobo - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157643&cm_re=b150-_-13-157-643-_-Product
$205 - the processor you mentioned http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117563&cm_re=i5_6500-_-19-117-563-_-Product
$360

As Bob said, I bet you can have a barely slower system in haswell for less than that and be perfectly content as well...

Here is the Haswell counter part ($190) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...7302&cm_re=haswell_cpu-_-19-117-302-_-Product
DDR3 1600 CL9 2x4GB ($40) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ion=DDR3 1600&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=30
($95) for cheapest mobo I would get - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157510&cm_re=H97-_-13-157-510-_-Product
$325

Yep!

but if it comes down to getting skylake and an inferior gpu or no ssd, haswell should be the way to go
+1.

Thanks for everyones help I went ahead and am getting the Skylake system for a bit more. I already had a 180gb SSD drive to throw in and an EVGA 650w platinum power supply so for the 35 bucks I just went for the latest and greatest
