what's so great about them, is just to get me to spend some money?

Essentially yes, I've yet to see a real reason to have one. Apparently if it you have a perfect viewing distance and sit dead center it may make it more theatre-esque, but I can't imagine it is great for viewing from anywhere off-center.

that is what i was thinking also, and if you have a larger room with chairs scattered around, like a living room, only the center of the couch would have the good view.
for a single computer monitor I could see this as a good thing but with multi monitor setups or a larger room with a larger tv, not so good.

I think they look like crap.
The angle you end up looking at the screen causes a color shift for me.
