Hi Guys,

I have 8350 and I had Extreme3 mobo with it. I was pretty happy with this setup until I decided to try overclocking. So I sold Extreme3 (for 55€).

After reading many threads in forums I decided to buy Sabertooth R2 (180€ for new card).

But then I saw a good deal (IMO) for used cards:
MSI 990FXA-GD65. 36€
http://www.msi.com/product/motherboard/990FXA-GD65.html

Asus M5A97 R2.0. 32€
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A97_R20

Asus Sabertooth 990FX. 38€
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH_990FX

Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5. 37€
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3891

Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P. 31€
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4642

And now I am confused..
1) Would you buy new Sabertooth R2 for 180 or used R1 for 38?
2) If you choose used one, would you buy Sabertooth or other one? I see M5A97 R2.0 is newer but is it better for overclocking?

I really like to buy Sabertooth but is it worth to pay five times more for new R2?..

I need stable overclock, I will buy new SSD (850 PRO for example), I have one GPU (280x). Will I notice any differences with new R2 over old R1?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. This is my first thread in overclockers.com :)
Have a nice day (and OC)!

of those get a saberkitty, what cooling are you using and how extreme do you want to clock?

What do you mean "saberkitty"? If you mean sabertooth, then the main question is if I should take new R2.0 for 180€, or old (used but in great condition) R1 for 38€. I'm sure R2 is better, but how much better will it be in OC? Is it worth to pay five times more for it..

I am going to buy H80i cooler but if you have other suggestions tell me :)

I'm not sure how extreme will I clock. It will be my first try ;)

And thanks for a reply.

I know some who use the R1 and it seems a very capable board. I would take the chance on the used in "great condition" myself. These boards also have a 5 yr warranty so it's likely that it's still covered for some time.

there is nothing wrong at all with a first release board, I pushed mine pretty hard and now mandrake keeps it warmed up.

Ok, thanks, I will go with a cheap R1.0 board and invest my money to the cooler.

One more question about cooler. I don't think anything bigger than h80i will fit in my case.. Do you know any other cooler with a size of h80i and better performance?

What case? If you're planning on really pushing the 8350 you're going to need more then a 120mm radiator.

Some "old" Cooler Master. Can't remember model, I'll check it at home in a few hours.

So if I would have:
1) FX-8350
2) Sabertooth R1.0
3) H80i GT cooler

My bottleneck would be cooler?

If so, I will check what is the model of my case and try to fit cooler with bigger radiator or go with air cooler (still can't believe that air cooler can beat h80i..)

Thanks again.

You're overclock is going to be determined by the chip itself, ambient temps and your cooling. If you have a low leakage chip, meaning it will run at lower voltage at X Oc then the average chip you may be ok with the H80i. This will also depend on the ambient temps within the case.

I got my Sabertooth R1.0 :) And it's working with stock cooler.

This is my case:

If I need bigger radiator I can remove unnecessary parts from my case (I will buy SSD disk anyway)
case2_mod.jpg

Then I can put even 3 x 140 radiator :)) (blue line in photo)

Can you suggest how to build best cooler?

Will H110i gtx perform better than h80i gt?

If you have the H80i use it and see if it's enough for what you want out of the chip. If it isn't we can cross that bridge at that time.

What model Chieftec Psu is that?

Yes, and it looks like it's only $20 more than the h80i gt after rebate on newegg. Looks like you've got room for a 240 up top, don't buy the h80i if you haven't already. There seems to be plenty of 240 AIO's for the same price anyways.

yea, in the top you can fit a 2x 120 all in one, the coolermaster seidon is a good one.

And never underestimate the value of creativity when funds are short. Radiator mounting can be somewhat flexible if you have a Dremel and a need. LOL

Is it enough for:
1) fx-8350
2) Asus 280x v2 top
3) Sabertooth
4) Some water cooling (still have no idea which to buy)
?

Actually there is no space in the top, fatter radiator will hit RAM sticks.. My thin fan almost touches them.

No worries, I have creativity skills and all tools required for it :D

You guys are so helpful! Thank you very much!!

So the last question to decide is cooler. Money is not the problem, size also (I will fit it to my case somehow).

So I open one of local stores and sort by price (most expensive on top): https://www.varle.lt/ausintuvai/?sort=-price
BTW, I'm from Lithuania, you guys are all from USA, right? So sorry for my bad english :)

So I'm going to choose from these (but if you know better ones, tell me please):
1) H110i gtx (will have to modify my case, but it's not a big problem)
2) BigWater 760 PRO 2U Bay (It would perfectly fit to my case!!) http://www.thermaltake.com/products-model.aspx?id=C_00001962

I don't find many reviews about BigWater 760 PRO, so I'm not sure if it will be better than h110i for example.. Do you guys know something about this cooler?
