Found a flea market fresh HP workstation, actually in shockingly good shape, and had a 3570 in it, for 150, so couldn't refuse. Right now its got 4gb ram and a 250 drive (prob 5400 since its from an office) and no video card, but does have a pci3 3.0 16x slot avail. Certainly going to get a card, prob 950ish, new ram, maybe a cheap ssd.

The real question is cooling. Right now its an HP z220 case, might add fans, maybe chop a side fan slot whole in, or maaaybe buy a new case and move the mobo in there. Any advice / is it possible to take out the stock cpu cooler for a better one?
thanks

What PSU is in the computer? You'll most likely need to replace that.

You should be able to replace the CPU cooler, but I don't know what height that case supports.

For many years now the desktop hard drive rpm standard has been 7200. Doubt if it's a 5400 rpm drive.

1. Higher watt quality PSU. 500 watt or so should do.
2. Decent video card. At least an nvidia 750ti.
3. More RAM (total of 8gb)
4. SSD

thanks for the quick replies.

I believe it is 350W, but I'll be taking it apart and checking more this weekend, same goes for the hd. I quick measured the case when I bought it, its mid tower size, about 7 inch wide, so most coolers/psu will fit (not the huge full tower sets tho).

Assuming I get a decent cooler, ram (prob 16gb, pretty cheap), and video card, will I be risking over heating, specifically air flow (case has 1 fan front 1 back, both standard size). All the pcs I've built in the past have been way over cooled, 3+ fans and side window fans.

This is a workstation case obv, but hp has been making millions of these, they must be decent with airflow?
Here is a listing with some pics of a case exactly like mine...

With a 3570 and GTX 950 you should have plenty of airflow with one intake and one exhaust fan.

no waaaay man. best response i could get. I am discostu9, or disscostu on steam, origin, xboxlive, EVERYTHING haha. Alllllways thought one day Id meet the original discostu s somewhere....you dirty dirty scoundrel

DiscoStus for liiiiiife

back on track, thanks ATM, I shall see when I get it put together soon, let ya know how it goes. I will prob at least get some huge 120mm fans in

correction, power appears to be 400w, that might leave enough for the video cards id like. Is there a way to check while the computer runs how much I'm using ?

Oh I'll post lots of pics very soon, I'm on a mini holiday trip for the weekend

sorry for the wait, crazy weekend. Here are some pics, power supply included. About to get windows installed, although only briefly, new RAM and ssd on the way, and then just graphic card debate. I think I can get away without a new power supply, but you guys can weigh in.
Also there is no fan installed blowing in, just the backside exhaust fan, think this will be ok?

and whats this little box with the spring things on the mobo?

finally, didn't realize the current gpu is MINI hdmi, so gotta get an adapter, or wait till I find a better card, uuugh

upon some investigating, it is obviously a 400w supply, the card in there now uses 65w, and the ones im looking at (950,960, or 380) all will take up to 200w, so im going to prob need to upgrade to 500 or 550w, so now that search begins. although it is close, and after the ssd goes in, a little closer, could try the 400w

thats what i was thinking too, im close. My worry is if im over...what happens, never used anything under a 500w so always been well over, do I risk hurting anything? or even if it doesn't and things just slow clock speeds because of lack of power, will I even be able to tell?
