Buy a GTX 1070 or 970?

After reading some articles about the 1070, it looks like it's going to be the direct replacement for the 970. I also read that 1070 would be good for 1440p and not 1080 (it's too good for 1080...blows it out of the water, of course). However, I really like the idea of 8G of memory and DX 12 functionality. Now for the question...do I buy a 970 when it drops in price after the 1080/1070 come out in a couple weeks (because I know it does well with 1080p) or do I go with a 1070 because of double the ram and the other functionality? I suppose I could go with the 1070 just so when I upgrade my monitor in the next year or so to a 1440p, it would still be a viable card.

I don't need to upgrade my monitor, but if the 1440's start dropping in price a bit as they become more widely used, that might be a good option. Unless you guys can recommend a 1440p monitor now that you like...I haven't looked at prices or reviews of 1440p monitors yet. I'm looking to build a new desktop computer (which I have asked about here on overclockers and gotten help with) but I'm holding off until the new cards come out to either buy a 970 cheaper or buy a 1070. Thanks for your responses.

I would probably get a 1070, but would wait for reviews/etc, and also look at what your budget supports at the time that you would be making the purchase.

unless your super fussy i'd stay at 1080 with top line monitors.
I game on dell ultra sharps at 1080 and 1440, if you can tell the difference you got better eyes than mine but the better monitors make all the difference in the world.

THIS ^^^Same here, I can see the pixels when I game and can't tell 1080p from 1440p monitor. Just get a good monitor.

The 1070, we are guessing, should be around 980Ti performance. A 980Ti kills 2560x1440 resolution and will likely do so for the next year or two (thinking default ultra settings on most games).

I can easily tell the difference between the two resolutions (39 y.o with glasses) in game or otherwise...

I would stick to what Janus and Zantal said.

Yes, that is nearly 25% smaller pixel pitch... pretty noticeable for most. Now, if you were talking 24" 1080 vs 27" 1440...........

This thread interests me. On the fence regarding selling my 970 to spend towards a 1070. Seems like a no brainer if the 1070 stomps the 970 but if its only slightly better, im not sure.

I don't think the 1070 is going to "stomp" a 970, I'll wait to see the numbers.
I use dell ultra sharp 24"@1080 and 27"@1440 all I can say is AWESOME!!!

Ah that's what I'm figuring. I went the other way with why I need a stronger card than before and while 1440p is what's making all the noise, I went 1080p@120hz vsync. Got my Asus 144hz monitor (but I run at 120hz) and try to vsync everything. I absolutely love it and with the lightboost hack, even the stuff that can't hold 120fps still looks great. But a midrange/lower end mainstream card won't really cut it for that nowadays.

However, having scored my NIB 970 for $100 made me supremely happy lol.

I just posted in the 1080 thread a leaked benchmark... it beats the 980Ti by a couple percent (GPU score from Firestrike).

Id call that a stomp.

ED posted a link in another thread showing a 1070 beating a Titan X in Firestrike 3D. That constitutes an a$$ whoopin' for a "970 replacement". It appears the 1070 will be able to go head to head with a 980Ti. They aren't out yet, so, we'll have to wait and see but it has AMD levels of hype.

I hope it does not have the same boost problem the 1080 has after using for 10-15 minutes.

1. Not all cards have that issue AFAIK.
2. Aftermarket cooling will obviously take care of it. It's a 180W card for Pete's sake. They have cooled 250w cards without issue.

Yes it is a 180w and the GTX 980 is 165W, the die is more concentrated heat due to the TSMC 16nm die shrink. Yes they have cooled 250w cards however they don't have the clock speed boost of the GTX 1070-1080.

Why would the clockspeed matter? 180W is 180W no matter if it's 500 mhz or 2.1GHz helping to make 180w. All that boosting fits right in the 180w threshold. Otherwise, it's not really a 180w card.

I was looking at the heat aspect is higher, that is the scuttlebutt around the net. The higher clock speed generates more heat and smaller die is harder to dissipate the heat. Boost clock takes a hit. Just because the 1080 uses 180watts does not tell what heat is generated out of 180watts, there could be a lot of leakage in the 16nm FinFET also material used.
