What are the benefits of purchasing a server with a hard disk backplane ?

The only advantage is fast replacement in case of drive failure and that there are single connections from motherboard/RAID controller to backplane instead of many single cables going through the case and blocking airflow ( when you have larger RAID ). At the same way you can connect external storage using SAS cable.

Thanks alot !!

As Woomack said, its a combination of swapping drives quickly and packaging/airflow. Here is a picture of my Poweredge R710 server as an example:

It takes a few seconds to remove a drive; significantly faster than most desktop systems. Air is pulled in through the front, immediately flowing over to the drives and cooling them.
