So finally pulled the trigger on an upgraded system. Looking forward to a little tweaking and getting it all setup, and getting back to a hyperthreaded PC. Been a few years since the i7 920 was released since I had one and even then I ran it most of the time disabled because it wasn't beneficial back then compared to today.

I'm replacing the guts of the system, motherboard, CPU, ram and Power Supply. Reusing my SSDs, GPU, Case.
Goal is to transplant my i5 2500k into another case I have laying around and just use the on board GPU for that and toss a spare SSD at it for a fun little rig to play with on the side.

Though question is... what type of tests should I run prior to getting the new rig? Looks like I could potentially get it by Friday... though we'll see how quick they can get it out and shipped (2-day) here to my office.

Few tests I know I'll try running or that have benchmarks but if there was any others I'd be happy to look into it.
Curious how it might affect some of my FPS with the new CPU and eventually I'll be upgrading my GPU to something newer.

Are the benchmarks to compare new to old or just get an idea of performance?
 
Comparison old to new... and performance. Guess a little of both.
I know a lot of people always say is it worth it and while we know its roughly a 20-25% increase in processing power, just want to help give a giving some info on what I can. Course going from 4 cores to 4 cores plus HT is a little extra performance with that. Typically try to when I do upgrades between GPU's so figured maybe its time to try it with just a CPU upgrade.

So looks like I'll be huddled around the PC tonight giving it a good run for its money as it sits.

Have to see if I have any thermal paste left now, if not might be stuck til next week when it arrives.
 
Well got the rig, finally got it pieced together. So now to time to start to run tests! :)

EVGA Supernova 750W PSU (yes overkill but wanted something nice to last potentially years)

So some results so far....
Nothing concrete yet as I wanted to start semi reasonable. Jumped CPU voltage to 1.3V, holds very well under load, don't notice any significant dips. Running 4.4Ghz. Case is still open but top temp seems to be right around 66-67C using the IntelBurnTest... its typically what I've been using in the past to post stabilities now for many years. Prime95 does good but I didn't want to wait potentially 8-10 hours to see similar results in minutes potentially. Temps so far, with at least the stress test is about 8-10C lower then what my i5 is so nice and cool :) Idle temps are much lower than my previous CPU's... way down to around 25-28C! Thats over 10C cooler than my i5 when it dropped its processor speed to 800Mhz.

More results to come in due time... going to definatly bump up the clock some. As well got to figure out how to enable proper C-States so it downclocks itself during idle. That is one that that I was really happy with my i5 2500k was able to hold that, OC nicely, and all done at a reasonable voltage.

Sounds great man, as for c-states just leave everything the way it was EIST etc.. and use offset/adaptive voltage +multi. that should give you what you're after.
 
4.6Ghz no problem with 1.3V. Full load 71C
4.7Ghz locked up pretty quick in stress tests.
So question is... How much voltage can I give her :D

BTW thanks Johan, I'll look into it once I get a stable OC more.
 
As long as temps hold you can go up to 1.4-1.43v. CPU will throttle at 100c low 90s is good during stress testing

One thing I found recently along with HT on the I7 6700k the IMC runs at a faster speed than the i5 6600k. The i7 6700k Ring Max 4100Mhz System Agent 1000MHz VS i5 6600k Ring Max 3500MHz System Agent 800MHz.
 
Well update on results.
4.7Ghz was stable with 1.35V... starting to fine tweak it. Increased ram speed from 3000, to 3200 no issues, passed quick tests with CL 14-14-14-34 so far. Testing load temps 76C high, nice and cool still IMO. Should land me in the mid 60's under nominal load.

Now started testing with 4.8Ghz, which seems to be that hard spot to get over. 1.4V was going strong, then dies a bit into it. 1.425V seems stable but seems high on voltage for long term putting it there, and a sizable increase in heat/power needs for 100Mhz sadly. Though temps was around 85-86C load which I was again happy about.

you got a better overclocker than me though... 4.7 takes me 1.38v 1.36 for 4.6 or 1.312 for 4.5

The 6700k is around 30% faster overall, but outside bench's you will likely only see difference in multi-threaded apps like video coding or very heavy CPU intensive games like MMOs :p
 
As you can see... it depends on the title as to how HT on/off reacts for FPS. If it can't use more threads than the native cores, or the cache increase for each of those cores doesn't help, you won't see much ofor a difference. :)
 
Hey question, I know Wingman brought it up in my memory thread but with the CPU Cache/Ring/Uncore Multi, what typically is that set at? Do you try to keep it with the speed of the CPU or do you leave it at its default setting. Think mine was 41x (4100Mhz). Right now I've been keeping it inline with my CPU Speed, curious if there is issues raising the speed of this?
