I am ashamed - build

I cant help but feel youre missing my point lol.

I7 6700 -> 3400mhz + boost
I7 6700k -> 4000mhz + boost

no overclocking required, its simply faster out the box. For 30$, I'd get the 6700k over the 6700. You can make up the cost difference by getting an H170 instead of a Z170.

Ahhh got you. I will get the K then. Thank you.
Micro center has that for 299

Yup! MC has good prices and I love that I can drive over and pick everything up in person.

Oh, dont worry, no one here hates you for it... ;)

:chair:

good luck with the build. And remember, the new i7s require you to buy an aftermarket cpu cooler.

Really? Just curious why is that?

microcenter has amazing deals that most of us here aren't able to take advantage of :p More or less, just a lot of jealousy to those that can take advantage of it ;)

If you were talking about the lack of cpu cooler, its because intel figures that most people get aftermarket coolers anyway.

I guess that makes sense. Most people do. I always did in the past.

You could easily get away with a cheaper PSU at ~550. That system will pull maybe 200w if you're lucky. Maybe an EVGA 500W Bronze.

TBH I'd really stick to the 6700, on a H170 board or something, there's almost no reason to go for a Z170 board given no OC. The 6700 is more than enough, despite the slight clock difference vs the 6700k. I guess the exception is that you're near a MC, which you can get good deals on board/cpu combos which might outweigh the savings on a non-z board and non-k cpu.

If you wanted to wait another week or so as well the GTX 1050 Ti is coming out, and I suspect that'll drop your price further. IMO consider an RX 480 4GB model as well on the cheap side. I know you've pretty much already decided on going well over your budget, but I think this would be a good choice too.

Been shuffling some things around:

To be clear, it's only the K sku (and HEDT) cpus that do not come with a cooler. The i7 6700 does come with a cooler. An i5 6600k does not....i5 6600 does.

WoW uses up to 8 threads, I know that for a fact as I play it on a daily basis. Proof that I'm not trying to go for max settings is that I suggested the FX-6300 and warned OP he might have to drop graphics, please read thread from the start. I had a FX-4300/6300/8370 and the difference was 10fps-20fps between each one with the same GTX 970. Core count counts ;)

And before you go further into the 6700k rant I did say at 1st that even a i7-2600k would work almost just as well.

With gaming Directx11 only uses 6 cores and mostly 4 cores, windows will split the workload into more threads or cores although it won't help in gaming. With a faster video card and running DX11 the game won't run much faster than having 4 core CPU. I purchased a i5 6600k 4 moths ago it will be fine for next 3 years for gaming on a 1080p 60Hz monitor till Directx12 games catch up.

What is going on with DX12 and Vulkan?

You could purchase a motherboard like my budget Gigabyte Z170 HD3 in case he wants to overclock in the future. Also you can't use 2400 speed memory, you should use 2133 with that combo.

That makes a TON more sense, thanks wingman.

And thanks for the clarification ED. I thought it was an "i7 thing", not a "K" thing lol.

He doesn't overclock, never has. I'd rather not get involved in that with him.

Thank you for the memory catch

Decent enough build... but what do you plan on installing the OS on? :clap:

Lets streamline this a little bit.

MC has "cpu+mobo" bundles, theres an H170 gigabyte board and i7 6700k (cant link it? sorry. Item code is 018226) for
$369.98

Geil ram will save you some money, 16gb for 69.99$

I would get an rx 480 over the 3gb 1060. One of those "just because" things Im afraid, the 3gb memory buffer is already starting to show signs of the time. Theres an Asus Rx 480 for $219.99

Sticking the same for psu and case

CPU + Mobo -> $369.98
Ram -> $69.99
GPU -> $219.99
PSU -> $47.99
Case -> $67.99

Total with tax -> $822.50

You forgot an SSD! I also recommend getting the Lepa Aquachanger 240 cooler. I've been running mine for months and it's ran better than my NH-d14 and its brother, the raijentek tisis (Both are pretty much the damn same). Its not that its better is why Im suggesting. It installs far easier, runs more quiet, and yes, has the benefit of "looking cool". Its also disgustingly cheap for what it is, I have no idea why. Its been a great product for me.

So here it is with an SSD recommendation

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/cvL2r7

Total : $123.98

Grand total -> $946.48....

Now thats all fine and dandy, but check out this complete kit from Newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.3135565

Its basically the same, only its got an HDD instead of an SSD, and 8gb of ram vs 16gb (this is truly FINE).... and its 50$ more expensive... but it comes with a freakin 1070 graphics card!

Barring that, heres another option

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.3020918

this has everything EXCEPT the graphics card for 705$. It actually comes with another HDD for mass storage (Which is cool).

Now for 705$ (+shipping, shouldnt be much), that leaves you a LOT of room to play around with for graphics cards...
