Good morning.

I just recently built my wife an ITX computer. It's getting very hot when gaming, even hot to touch for an extended time. Build is below... any ideas? From what I was reading the airflow on this case is really really good and the design is great for cooling. But it's getting pretty hot and sometimes her games crash, I'm assuming because of under performance when the computer gets too hot.

SilverStone Technology Mini-ITX Slim Small Form Factor Computer Case RVZ02B
Corsair SF Series, SF450, SFX Form Factor, 450 Watt (450W)
WD Black 1TB Performance Mobile Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM
Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR4 2133 MT/s
MSI Gaming Intel Skylake B150 LGA 1151
Intel Core i5 6500 3.20 GHz Quad Core Skylake Desktop Processor, Socket LGA 1151
HD Radeon 6850 GPU

Is it the graphics card that is inefficient and just causing too much heat? Why is it getting this hot?

As per some suggestions I read, I am going to be replacing the stock heatsink and fan with:
DEEPCOOL GABRIEL CPU Cooler Low Profile 4 Heatpipes 120mm Slim PWM Fan HTPC Cooler
Noctua SSO2 Bearing, Retail Cooling NF-F12 iPPC 2000

Doh...

I didn't run any temps during those times. I should though. Any recommended apps to use to run temps for GPU and/or CPU? Also what should I be looking at for good temperatures and bad temps?

I personally like HWMonitor. Shows you all the items in your system with voltages, temps, fan speeds, etc. Kinda get everything in one spot.

Uhm, your Radeon is the only hot part inside this System, but at around 130 W i see it as doable for a 12l case. Indeed the case is pretty minor, just 2l more than a Shuttle SFF but as Long as some proper fan is getting the heat out of the case it should work.

However, in my experience using a SFF PC (in the past) i have to admit that a very small volume case may not be able to get the heat out of the case in term the case fan (Focus on the exhaust, it is more effective on a small case) is providing to less airflow, so pay Attention to it. A cheap fan and/or low rpm may not cut it and you may have to improve this matter.

Ultimately, indeed, you should check out the temperatures of your processors and Motherboard can be useful too. Very small cases may have issues with Motherboard temperatures because the culprit is the airflow (not case size itself but a low case size usually means to have to less fan power attached) and paired with hot gamer GPUs it can become messy.

However, CPU got a good heat protection and it will simply clock down when max temp is reached. GPU and MB is another Story, they may not clock down or increase fan Speed properly... and it will end in instability or even crashes.

Edit: Was checking the case more precisely, it Looks like there is no exhaust fan (passive means not much more than a hole) and only one "oversized" side fan in order to blow at CPU and MB area. Well, it certainly works for CPU and MB only, but it will be messy in order to cool down the included 6850 this way, because this GPU is kinda locked inside a small area and almost unable to remove all the heat by itself without any external help. Maybe it works in term you are removing the GPU case-plate, so the GPU can suck in more air with less obstruction. The architecture is basically a 2x top blow configuration, not to bad but for many GPUs simply not sufficient this way and a great GPU cooler is a big bonus.

a pic or two of your actual system might help those who are willing to help

Yea... this build was getting really hot. The room was heating up and very uncomfortable for my wife...

Kind of feel bad that I went through so many lengths to get her a ITX build. If I have to change the case to a mid-tower that's going to suck, but it's really uncomfortable (temp wise) in the room after about 1 hour of gaming and how much heat this thing generates... will have to get a new PSU too :( It's odd, the GPU on this thing is on the bottom right side of the tower with the way it's built... and that part isn't hot. The top back most part of the case itself is VERY hot. It is very uncomfortable to put your hand on even for a little bit.

Here is the report from HWMonitor after about 2 hours of gaming.

Cooling the temperature of the components won't keep the system from heating up the room. To do that you need to reduce power draw.

Also, just a screenshot of HWMonitor is needed, it's much easier to read that way too.

Here you go :)

I tried to go with a lower power build across the board than her previous computer. I don't mind purchasing different hardware for her desktop as long as it will help with the lower power and lower heat.

Maybe a different GPU? (She needs a new one anyway) The most intensive thing we play is WoW, OW and LoL. So doesn't even need to be that insane of a GPU.

Temps are perfectly normal for a SFF build with a stock CPU cooler and that GPU.

I'd recommend a 1050Ti if that'll fit your budget.

It's because they're about to release, I think later this week. The price/performance and the raw performance is going to be much higher than a 950.

Do these temps reflect what is going on when she is gaming or was this screenshot taken under some kind of other task? We need pics that reflect the system under load of gaming in order to see what happens with the GPU. Looks like the CPU is being loaded by thge GPU is not as the max and min temps are essentially the same. If you will take the screenshot after gaming is done and the system has cooled down to idle it will give us load and idle temps of both CPU and GPU. Max and min temps will both be reflected.
