i was thinking 750ti versus the 1060 or r470. i might throw a random game on (i.e. car games)...and i'd like to upgrade to a bigger, 4k monitor later (currently asus mx279) thoughts?

I would not recommend a 750ti at this time. That is a pretty old card at this point.
A 1060 absolutely crushes a 750 ti so much that they are not even really comparable.
Gaming anything at 4K will be your issue. 4K video playback will not be an issue for either of those cards (1060/470).

Those reviews and video should give you a decent idea of the capabilities of each of the cards in comparison to one another. We may also have a review or two of some of those on here too, but (sadly) I can't remember.

I'd argue that an AMD 470 is worth the extra over a 4GB 1050ti. But then again budget will just go up and up until you are getting a 1070 or 1080.

wound up getting the MSI RX480 on sale at newegg...probably much more card than i need

The 480 is a good card, and a lot more than you would have gotten for the same money a year ago. If you're just using it for video it should do the job for quite a while.
