May not work for you, but when my gigabyte z170 board wouldn't post I had to short out the main bios chip (pins 1 and 6) to get it to boot/restore off of the backup bios. That was a gaming 5 though, not sure if your 7 has a switch for the backup bios...

Hmmm, ok.. I have the dual bios, and have always had the switch on "2". Gonna mess with more today...

Question?
So I got the square-trade on a whim, and it was just offered up during the process, as we are all familiar with. $30 to cover this board (EDIT: wrong! the $30 is for the each 980 Ti which covers $700-$800, see below), and I haven't looked into their terms. According to Jimmy, they just send him a brand new phone, no questions asked. I am in the process of finally uploading my proof-of-purchase and vaiting for verification, then I'll ask...

But this board has a THREE year manufacturers warranty!!!

Either way, which way would any of you go? RMA or paid warranty???

(I guess if square trade is a new rig it's a no brainer, right?)

And, sigh, yes this is the second board I have killed in the last 6 months.

EDIT:
http://help.squaretrade.com/help/he...acturer-s-warranty-and-my-SquareTrade-planFAQ
If there’s an issue with your item that is normally covered by the manufacturer's warranty during that time, we’ll refer you to the manufacturer so they can resolve it. That way, you can save your SquareTrade plan for when you really need it – after the manufacturer’s warranty expires.

If you purchase "Drops & Spills" coverage, then your SquareTrade plan also covers accidental damage such as falling off a table and liquid damage, which is not covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. In these cases, SquareTrade has you covered from Day One.

I don't think I have drops and spill coverage. WHats the point then, Gigabyte warranty longer than this POS!!!

EDIT2:
DONT USE SQUARE TRADE!!!!
unless you get the "Drops and Spills" coverage!!!
Was wrong as cited above. The mobo was $10! for $200-250. Each card was $30 for $700-800 and the 6700K was $20 for $450-500.

Looking to cancel them all and a big pro-rated refund...

Back to business

Ok, lets get specific here. What we actually talking about trying...

Anyone on the severe battery drain? That's the short, right??? But 3.3v to 2.88 in half an hour?
Thanks!

Prost!

Maybe this will help Swart http://www.overclockers.com/forums/...-Forcing-backup-BIOS-on-Gigabyte-motherboards
Some say 1 and 6 others say 5 and 6. But this is the pin out regardless
..some and others!!! I've heard of those people, hmmm..interesting...
Which One!! There are two bios chips there? And before I get to that...
EDIT:That link is great, thanks!!! Always right there in the annuls of OCF..

Still no love on this battery question? I am down to ONE good battery:shock:
Again 3.3 v to 2.86 in no time, was convinced it was the entire battery socket shorting out...
But then I measured the 2.86v on the backside...

So what does that tell me? Scotty you out there?

Update

Yeah pins 1 and 6 were the ones that worked for my board.

Yep, had to finagle doing this myself, I wasn't sure what position I needed to have my switch in when I was doing this. Per the Mario thread.
Yep. Just make sure you flip the switch to the bad bios so you flash the other one.

I was all switchity-switch and trying each chip, but managed to get some results a couple of times.

All I would get is the beep, Eco and OC buttons to light up. I waited anxiously for something to happen, nada.

And now I am out of batteries!!! This one I wasz using for this process is toast, 2.84v started at 3.17  (too low???)

Gonna surf any feedback later, meanwhile starting the RMA process to Gigabyte. Good thing I got this thing all registered on-line and that good stuff...

Thanks!

Yeah, I was thinking last resort on reflowing solder.

Since I can measure the battery Vs from the backside, I don't think that's it...

And no one has given any insight into the battery loss. I gotta go get more batteries as I have been through a 6-pack...
One was a dud, so not sure if bad batteries or the drain is due to the short???
Anyone?

Thanks!

Cheers!

isn't the battery thing kind of a moot point now that you have narrowed the problem down to the board?
or do you plan to magic the battery problem over to the new board?

Has all the corrosion visible in the battery holder in post #6 been cleaned out? A little Coca Cola on a Q Tip (Pepsi won't work. Has to be Coke) followed by a thorough alcohol rinse is a good start.

Huzza Whaa?? The battery socket is part of the board!!! Isn't a good battery required by the board to post?
And I got a problem I will magic right on over to you:sly:

x2 on using coke -- the corrosion disappears

Hey, I knew that! Poured Coke on corroded car battery terminals a number of times. I will try it, just gotta get some coke...and more batteries...
Submitted RMA request to Gigabyte, no response yet...I'd rather fix it:cool:

Thanks!

"Cheesburger, Cheeseburger, Cheesburger, Pepsi...."
"...Pepsi no Coke.."

There is not a major motherboard manufacturer that has positive customer service ratings that I know of. They all are difficult to work with it seems.

Here's a thought on your battery drain. Maybe put a meter on the positive and negative terminals of the socket and see if there is a draw on it with the board off. I'm far from an EE but the draw should be absolutely minimal. Hopefully someone with more experience can expand on this.

To do this you would need to use the multimeter in amp mode. Essentially use one wire as a connection to the battery(either negative or positive), then use the multimeter as the other 'wire' which should give you the current flow from the battery into the board.

I still think the issue is not the battery socket but whatever the battery was connected to got fried when it shorted.

 I am done messing with it...

So err, uh yeah...
Déjà vu here, haven't I been in this thread before:confused::shrug::-/
Seems really familiar, but I just can't quite place it...

Hmm, it will come to me eventually...

So been in contact with Gigabyte and I will endeavor to persevere in sharing the experience for posterity sake.

DO NOT USE GIGABYTE eSUpport http://esupport.gigabyte.com !!!!!

Have yet to hear back from Andy! Will update thread as we move through the Gigabyte RMA process.
OH YEAH, My Asus Maximis VII board RMA! I guess we'll have a head to head comparison between my experience with Asus and now Gigabyte.

Hasta Entonces!

Check your capacitors. Blown capacitors could cause exactly these symptoms and are relatively easy to replace.
