I have used RAM Disks using system RAM and Physical
RAM disks. Unless you are running a large database or
and application that looks like a database, it's a waste
of time and money. The only other major app where
a RAMDISK can be useful is Photoshop.
In almost all cases the RAM disks which take some of
your system RAM are self defeating. Some OSes do
better than others. Letting the OS handle the RAM is
almost always better.
For physical RAM disks, the benefit is greater, but ALL the
vendors in the physical RAM Disk business have managed to
put themselves out of the market with inflated costs.
Unless you have a consistant need for sustained high I/O
there is no way to justify either approach.
There is no free lunch.
