When I got my first copy of wim/me (upgrade edition from win/98) back when it came out, the book said that you must not use any 3rd party defrag utils.

Is this true or was MS just trying to discourage people from buying any software that they did not profit from?

It is absolutely NOT true. Third party utils are MUCH more effective, as they
1) can optimize swapfile, which can't be done using built-in defragger;
2) are not restarted when anything writes to disk, so they complete much faster.

I recommend using Norton SpeeDisk (absolutely stable and safe), but you could do a search on this forum - other (free) progs have also been mentioned.

Hope this helps.

yea, most 3rd party utilites defrag and scandisk in the fraction of the time. The better would be diskeeper or Ontrack. Windows bought a stripped down diskeeper for the newer windows distros. I guess they got the point.
