No go. Connecting BSEL 1 to BSEL to 2 had no effect on the FSB whatsoever.

A weird thing is before the pin mod, I couldn't set the FSB to 266 in CMOS (no boot) but now setting at 266 boots fine but the FSB remains at 200.

I'll post the pics. later.

How did you measure that the FSB is 200 MHz with the pin mod and the BIOS set to 266?

CPU-Z will show the FSB. Also used RMClock, Everest, & Intel Thermal Analysis to check the figures. Currently, it's at 230 set via BIOS. 265 will not boot up. 266 will boot but at 200 as previously mentioned.

the only other pins you can use to "ground" that pin is by connection to a "VSS" pin. that would require using thin wires.

if one of them is "low" then yes by connecting them it should work. though im wondering if he should just connect all three pins with the "defrogger kit". bit odd it didnt work. i take it this was on the ECS mobo?

Yes, it's the ECS motherboard from Fry's combo deal. Still no luck w/ the defogger repair paint. I've given up.

Edit:Successful Pin Mod

This guy got it to boot at 266 default w/ the correct pin mod. He's running it at 300.

Finally a Success!!!

Following the instructions on the link I've posted above, my E4300 booted at 266 (default BIOS settings). I'll post pics. soon. (but I'm also busy watching the Bears...)

EDIT: Ok, here are the pics. (1) Desktop showing the fsb info. (2) failed attempt by connecting only BSEL 1 & 2, (3) successful result by connecting BSEL 1 to VSS

glad it works but that is truely odd that you needed the VSS pin to ground it. as the other already ground bsel pads should have worked. on another thought though you could Isolate the "high" pad with a non conductive paint. then use the defrogger paint on top to get the low signal from the other bsel pad.

i still think the E4300 is the one to look at once faster cored "allendale" come out and/or they get a Stepping change.

im sure theres a coupla ways to go about doing this. He could have also tried connecting all 3 BSEL pins in a L shape

That's about a 13% increase from 266MHz - still pretty safe.

doh0000, could you attach the working cpu pic here (if they aren't already). Links to imageshack, or whatever, always end up broken & good info like this gets lost. thanks

How can I attach the picture here directly?

nd4spdbh2:

The defogger repairt kit is available at either AutoZone or PepBoys (or any other auto parts stores). It's made by Permatex (around $11)
I'm using a $20 cooler by Scythe (I think it's Katana). I need to take out the cpu & reapply the thermal grease because I really didn't clean the die or apply a fresh layer of thermal grease after I did the pin mod.
For removing the repair paint, I used a nail polish remover (works pretty good). I know Vcc is right above BSEL 1 but I was told a connection should be made to Vss (don't ask me why....I have no clue).

Awesome,

After more reading I was going to do just that, the "C" to connect to the VSS pad. Great job, and now if only my dad would just get off his computer or stop rendering his darn ray traces... he loves the new rendering speed. If only he could see it could be much faster if he just let me at it!

Sweetness Doh

VCC is a voltage pin, VSS is ground. i suggested it since you said the connection to another bsel pad didnt work. those are the only 2 ways to ground a bsel pad.

I just want to thank everyone that kept up w/ this thread (espcially bryan_d for starting the thread & giving me the motivation to go ahead w/ the pin mod & Evilsizer for providing very resourceful information & all others who tagged along and helped me in any way possible.

It's been a while since I really had fun overclocking (after the Celeron 300A, everything else has been pretty mediocre). But this pin mod has to be the most gratifying OC experience so far. What a bargain at $150!!

I've been following this thread the entire weekend and just registered to thank doh0000 for the effort and great pics! I got an E4300 and discovered that it was stuck at 223fsb on my Asrock ConRoe945G, but with this mod it seems the easy 2.4/2.7Ghz OC should be attainable after all.

The value of these chips is really incredible, especially if it drops to $113 in April. I remember drooling over the FX-60 which cost a thousand bucks less than a year ago.

doh0000,

Thank you for posting those numbers. I'm glad Everest showed AGP speeds.

This gives me the warm and fuzzy that PCI and AGP speeds remain at the standard speeds, 33MHz and 66MHz respectively with the BSEL mod and FSB=266MHz. I was afraid that the BIOS might set dividers based on cpuid instead of on BSEL values.

An overclock of the CPU to 2.4 GHz without disturbing AGP/PCI clocks with this modest board is pretty cool.

Right, I extrapolate AGP=66MHz with a FSB=266MHz from the Everest report.

AGP(FSB=300MHz) = 300MHz/266MHz*66MHz = 75MHz

that doesn't make any sence, the AGP/PCI changing depending on the FSB of the CPU you stick in the motherboard
