Then where will iNET trod next? Only registered users with more then 50 posts...only registered users with more then 1000 posts...only senior members don't see the ads...only mods and admins don't see the ads? Where will it lead? A new hosting provider for OCF perhaps?

Guys, since you are already using Firefox, then install Adblock plus and nuke all the ads automatically, including the contextual ads. When sites start doing stuff like this is when they lose any click through support from me.

My 2 cents:

I have never clicked on an ad here because I've never seen one that interested me. Maybe if they would show some ads for computer hardware that actually relates to most of the topics on the forum. Instead we get Puzzle Pirates and scare-tactic identity theft protection schemes.. Server hosting services I can see are somewhat related, but if you really want to increase revenue, try having relevant ads! I see from a screencap above that 'mods' was double underlined meaning you would get an ad when mousing over it. WTF are they going to try and sell you that relates to 'mods' ? Something even farther removed from the forum users' core interests than even Puzzle Pirates, no doubt.

If the forum is being poorly managed from a business perspective, don't just pile on to the crap that is not working. Try to find a solution rather than pedaling harder in the wrong direction. You'll just make the problem worse when traffic drops off.

I'm perfectly fine with paying to remove ALL ads from the site, even if that means paying a bit more so that people who are not logged in won't get the annoying text link ad thingys. They will scare away many newbies..

To the mods, you guys are great. Keep on keepin' on.

Exactly, we will lose people that would have registered. As I stated earlier (I'm sure there are other out there too), I would never have signed up here if those were active.

To be honest I think by doing this iNet will dig themselves into a deeper hole because carrying on from what has been stated above, if we start losing prospective users (who MAY click on the ads at the side of the page for a certain website) then iNet will obviously lose revenue. I don't know if I made myself clear in that so I'll shorten it:

Less users = less traffic = less chance the ads will be seen and therefore decreases anychance of potential revenue. All in all I think iNet just shot themselves in the foot.

So far only affecting IE. this is really not needed. im sure they make enough money on ads that its pointless to have this.

Do red or green members have any input on this? or is it all Inet?

And i really don't care about installing a by-pass, sure i know its easy and takes 30 seconds. we shouldn't have them in the first place.

It's the main reason I don't read [H] (whom shows these ads even after you've logged in, although they don't seem to do it with nearly as many keywords as we're already getting here for guests). In fact, right now, [H] is less cluttered with ads then OCF. Unless some action is taken against iNET I can't foresee positive things for OCF in the future.

It's not just IE, check my original screenies in the first post of this thread.

I think we need a poll asking "if iNet doesn't remove these in-text ads from ocforums, will you cancel your ocforums membership" and see what the response is. I know I for one would, no matter what easy ways there are around it (such as installing the Firefox add-on or unsubscribing from the ads).

Fellas and ladies, ...the staff and owners know this thread is here. I do not see a need for a poll or otherwise.

The big question is.. Will they come in and reply to us? Or just leave it be, and say screw it.
It is our property. Don't like it go someplace else.

My thing is two fold.

I do not want my words and suggestions for products taken into a linkage. Then a non-member thinks I am promoting something.

iNet broke their word! They said textual ads were DOA. Now they are here. .. This is not about ocf eats bandwidth more then it pays the bills. Principle is how I roll. If iNet would of came in and said.. There is no discussion. We are doing text ads, no discussion... I MIGHT of lived with that. I would of considered supporting it somehow someway.

I currently use IE7 to read OCForums. I don't block any ads. This is a concious decision on my part to support the forum.

However, if these ads stay, I will start using Firefox with adblock so that I don't see any ads.

Maybe it is time for a sticky to show how to block these type of ads?
iNet uses these ads to make money, do they really want you to ENCOURAGE you to block them? I like the banner ads and I don't block them because I support OCF. These inline ads absolutely suck and had I seen them back a year ago, I would not have joined - how would I have known that they went away for registered users?

Here is my idea: Add another banner ad or two for the unregistered.

I would be more inclined to a "jump ad" than inline.

Pretty much instead of perverting member's written text. Place and ad in between posts randomly.

I think iNET should have a frame for unregistered users saying something along the lines of

Join OCForums to get rid of the banner ads

(add more banners in the frame for unregistered.

+1

And wolf, as much as I hate the text ads, those damn inbetween post ads annoy me about as much.

I know this was brought up a few years ago but I'm sure some people here would pay ~$10 a year for membership so that all the ads would go away. There are thousands of members registered here. Think about it, it only works out at 2.7c a day. Thats not a hell of a lot when you think about it. But then again its up to admin to decide what to do. I would be up for that sort of scheme. Just my beef
