Question if you could RAM my PC, what would you use?

a simple situation. (if there is such a thing)
im building PC to use for Design & Editing purposes.
im using the Q9550 and asus P5Q deluxe...(vista 64)

i want to stick 8gb of dual channel memory into the set up, to satisfy my intense multitasking and the ravaging power-hunger of my software.

(ill probably want to OC the setup to run at around 3.2 to 3.4ghz)

ive been loking at the geil 8gb dual channel black dragons....is it any good?

what RAM would you recommend..and why?
thx.

Two of either of the following sets:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220269 - 4-4-4-12 Patriot Extreme 2x2GiB - $79.99 x 2 - $15 rebate ("one per household", so can only use on one set)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820141366 - 5-5-5-15 PQI Turbo 2x2GiB - $76.99 x 2 (no rebate)

I've used both (two of each) sets (The Patriot in a K9A2, and the PQI in my Rampage Formula right now). I've always found PQI memory to be great, and have never had any issues with it at stock speed. It doesn't seem to like overclocking, though, so you'd probably have to leave the divider set for DDR2-800. The Patriot set I had ran fine on my K9A2 at DDR2-960, but I never bothered to OC it much.

Go with the cheapest set of Ballistix. Your OC target is not not too high. Also, ignore the "I killed my Ballistix" complaints u see...most of them are from noobs who just bump up the voltage without proper testing.

C'mon Watcher, read the post. This guy needs 8gb (4x2gb). Unless he has 8 dimms, the cheap Ballistix are not going to work for him. Shame on you. I'm telling ur mom.

The Patriot's are nice. I never liked the pqi stuff because of a few bad purchases, but I'm sure there ok. Also check the OCZ Reapers. I currently have 2x2gb of pc8500 reapers that I got for under $70 AMR. I think that deal is long gone, but still good sticks.

I've always had good experiences with PQI ram..... Might be worthwhile checking out the Team Dark 4G Kit(2x2G) PC8500 1066Mhz CL5(TXDD4096M1066HC5DC-D). Not sure if its any good but the price is right.

Why would you use a server platform as a workstation?

I'd pick two kits of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231145

Server platforms offer multi-CPU configurations and have huge RAM capacity. Drawback is most of these use ECC+Registered RAM, which is expensive. But if his application is so demanding and is a professional usage, better go for a professional system. Ofcourse cost is a big factor, but then do u want to upgrade the whole system everytime or would you rather be modular?

For physical ramming I prefer the old-school iron-capped log.

Would've put those in my post, but every G.Skill set I've ever had (on three or four different motherboards) has been bad, and I just returned a set of G.Skill that was already replaced once (bad modules both times). I know other people have working G.Skill, but when it can't past memtest86+ or Prime95, I'm not recommending it.

I prefer my Dodge for Ramming. If you can't Dodge it, Ram it!

For the memory, I am still pretty partial to Corsair, Patriot, OCZ, and Kingston if you are really working on a budget.

thanks for all the replies with suggestions of RAM for my computer setup...

and for the comments advising what peice of hardware would be the best to use to physically RAM my setup!...i'll bear those suggestions in mind for when i want to dispose of the kit.

i dont mind spending upto £150 (US $300) for the correct memory. (8GB dual channel...must be fast)

are the premium brands more reliable?
or is cheap RAM just as reliable?

Premium brand allow more flexibility (speed and timings) and have a greater chance of arriving in working order. I would use these:
