hard drive monitor terminal/command line

for debian I am looking for a cmd line program that can give me some info about disk activity.

The reason being on my server, on a 100 base network should be able to have more then 1 person access the files without it going crazy.

However, every once in a while it the computer just grinds like crazy, I have 4 hard drives in there with 16meg cache on sata.

So I want to figure out which hard drive is causing the issue if I can.

maybe install the package "sysstat". it has the command line utility iostat. run it like this: "iostat x" and it will refresh every x seconds by default.

it gives you output like this:
Code:
root@gx280:~# iostat
Linux 2.6.27-9-generic (gx280) 01/10/2009 _i686_

avg-cpu: %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle
           1.27 0.01 1.41 0.21 0.00 97.09

Device: tps Blk_read/s Blk_wrtn/s Blk_read Blk_wrtn
sda 1.19 103.46 56.87 14367971 7897456
sda1 1.19 103.39 56.47 14359324 7842048
sda2 0.00 0.06 0.40 8223 55408
sdb 0.37 9.46 2.93 1313997 406336
sdb1 0.37 9.45 2.93 1312735 406336
sdb2 0.00 0.00 0.00 6 0
sdb5 0.00 0.01 0.00 864 0
oh yeah, i forgot to mention that if you just use "iostat" without a parameter, it gives the usage since the system has booted.
