Processor and Socket Compatibilities

Motherboard Sockets

Socket Am2

940 contacts in a "Pin Grid Array." Stock bus of 200mhz. Hyper Transport 2 @ 1ghz (1000mhz) (Max speed). Single power plane for cores and IMC.

Supports ALL socket Am2 and Am2+ processors, but will be limited to a Hyper Transport speed of 1ghz (1000mhz). May socket Am3 processors, but will be limited to a Hyper Transport speed of 1ghz (1000mhz) also.

Socket Am2+

940 contacts in a "Pin Grid Array." Stock bus of 200mhz. Hyper Transport 3 @ 2.6ghz (2600mhz) (Max speed). Split power planes: One for processing cores and one for the IMC.

Supports ALL socket Am2 and Am2+ processors. May support Am3 socket processors with a BIOS update, but cannot run DDR3.

Socket Am3

941 contacts in a "Pin Grid Array." Stock bus of 200mhz. Hyper Transport 3.x @ 3.2ghz (3200mhz) (Max speed). Split power planes: One for processing core and one for the IMC.

Supports ALL socket Am3 processors. Will run DDR3. DDR2 is questionable, but not confirmed to run with a Socket Am3 Processor in an Am3 socket motherboard.

Processors

Socket Am2

940 pins on the processor. Not compatible with: 754, 939, 940 or Am3 socket mother boards. Supports DDR2 alone. Hyper Transport speeds up to 1ghz (1000mhz).

Socket Am2+

940 pins on the processor. Not compatible with: 754, 939, 940 or Am3 socket mother boards. Supports DDR2 alone. Hyper Transport speeds up to 2.6ghz (2600mhz).

Note: Am2 and Am2+ processors are NOT forward compatible with any socket Am3 mother boards.

Socket Am3

938 pins on the processor. Not compatible with: 754, 939 or 940 socket mother boards. Supports DDR2 and DDR3. Hyper Transport speeds up to 3.2ghz (3200mhz).

Core Unlocking.

This section is not really finished, nor will it ever be, but I have a link from Psykoikonov having to do with core unlocking on the 720-705e's and 550-545's.

Link to ES forum.

On another note, the 810's have been noted to unlock the 2mb's of L3 cache that are still on die. I have a linky to this but I know nothing else. I believe the method was the same as unlocking cores, but I have also heard there was nothing required to unlock the cache.

Guide made with the help of Archer0915 and Psykoikonov. Feel free to tell me if you want anything added or edited.

Bump for core unlocking section addition. Slight revision from Archer0915 as well (grammar).

Chance you need to add the fact that the AM2/AM2+ CPU's are not forward compatible to AM3. If it is there I missed it.

I think that power saving stuff is how you "save up" power for a major OC. it kinda stores it up in a secret cache pool on the board, and when you are ready to use it, just turn off all that power saving stuff and do the magic keys in bios and all that power is yours to be had."

Yup yup yup! And the fact that Am3 boards only take DDR3 (to my knowledge) is another reason but I will edit to make it more clear .

Edit: Edited it and by the way, thanks nzaneb!

You might add in the BE component as well - that makes a big difference to a lot of people.

Otherwise - Good Job!!!

Thanks for the input as well as the nice job! Popped them in for the chips. Just had to find the right way to do it! I just realized the vast amount of information that is stuffed into this chart!

Edit: Also added the 810 cache unlocking to the "core unlocking" section.

I might have kept the designation down to BE* (i.e., "955BE*") with a footnote showing "*Black Edition (unlocked multiplier)" or something like that - just to make the chart cleaner.

But your way is good too ...

Hmmm. I agree. It looks a bit more cluttered and you have to read more to get to the speed of the processor. Will do!

Edit: Used a color-coded super script. I think it looks good .

Good info...helps in clarifying a lot of confusion about what fits or what doesn't fit between AM2/AM2+ and the AM3 stuff.

I was confused until QuietIce and Trents cleared it up for me , so I'm sure that this will help in the same way.

Yupp. I figured I would just take all[or most of] the information having to do with the new cpu's and boards because we seriously get a "is my board compatible" thread every other day if not every day. But thanks for the compliments!

Yupp. Amd will be filling those the pins in the future. There is an article about Am3 that Tom'sHardware did and they broke off two pins from a Phenom II 940 so it would fit in an Am3 board and it wouldn't run in an Am3, but ran in an Am2+ which means Amd did something other than removing two cpu pins.

Just the wattage. I believe it was made as an Am3 quad for lower wattage sockets. As far as I know, both chips are locked upwards on the multiplier and everything else is the same.

need some intel on memory limitation concerning the

Regor

L3-less
250 65w: Dualie at 3ghz
245 65w: Dualie at 2.9ghz
240 65w: Dualie at 2.8ghz

looked up the AthlonII x2 250 on google, memory configurations are mentioned for DDR2 (pc6400) 800mhz, and DDR3 1066, not DDR2 pc8500 1066mhz like what I have.

the asus board in my sig states in the manual that due to cpu limitation only 1 ddr2 pc8500 1066 memory dim per channel will work, there are 4 memory banks so I am assuming they mean 1 each, 2 of the 4 banks, so at this point, 4 Gigabytes of ddr2 pc 8500.

thats just this one motherboard, my question is, does this line of chips from AMD support ddr2 pc 8500 1066 ram, or will it automatically adjust down to 800mhz?

here is a link for technical specifications

http://www.amd.com/us/products/deskt...omparison.aspx

anyone have a athlon2 x2 250 set up with some pc8500 and some proven results? if not I will soon find out with the parts I have.

All the Phenom II AM2+ CPUs were listed like that. There is sometimes an issue with 1066 RAM but not always. AMD and the board manufacturers put that up there to cover their butt in case the CPU/board combination triggers a problem.

IMO, that notation should NOT be included in the list since it doesn't always hold true. However, I think it's good you brought the subject up so it's in the thread ...

Quiet basically said it all. I believe the ram issues were with the first gen. Am2+ Phenom II's such as the 940 and 920. The only other ram issues I have heard about are really motherboard issues having to do with DDR3 1600 working to its full specs. Also note, that since the 2xx series is Am3, you can run DDR3 in those (up to 1333mhz IIRC).
