Need help with 2500k overclocking

Hello Dear Overclockers!
This is my first thread I am happy to join this community!

I just bought a 2500K with a P67A UD3 B3 mobo, and Kingston Genesis XMP 1600Mhz. I am having problem with overclocking the cpu and the ram. I read that this cpu should work at 3.7-3.8Ghz with stoch voltages, but when i overclock it i get boot error and it reverts to 3.4Ghz.

I tried these settings and none worked:

Try 1: (i was following a guide)
CPU 4,5Ghz 45*100
BCLK 1010
SPD 16.00 (XMP off but with XMP on with profile1 enabled still not working)
Timing to 9 9 9 27
Real-Time Ratio Changes in OS is enabled
Disabled everything else except for CPU Cores Enabled
Bi-Directional PROCHOT on Auto
Load-Line Calibration enabled

Voltages:
CPU Vcore 1.300V
QPI/Vtt 1.12V
System Agent Voltage 1.135V
Dram Voltage 1.64V
I left everything else on Auto
=
effect:
-Boot ok.
-BSOD on windows7 loading screen

Try 2:
I just set the XMP profile on, everything else untouched
=
effect:
wont boot, resets to 1333Mhz

Try 3:
Set ram to 1600Mhz manually, voltage to 1.66, everything else untouched
=
effect:
wont boot, resets to 1333Mhz

Try 4:
CPU to 4,0 Ghz 40*100
RAM on 1333 stock voltages
CPU voltages same as Try 1
=
effect:
wont boot, resets CPU to 3,6ghz
sometime boots, then BSOD on loading screen

Try 5:
CPU to 4,0 Ghz 40*100
RAM on 1333 stock voltages
CPU voltages untouched
=
effect:
wont boot, resets CPU to 3,6ghz

So thats all so far. What am i doing wrong? Why does my RAM not working on 1600Mhz? I know its 1333Mhz really, but with XMP it should work at 1600 right? And why am i not able to overclock my CPU at all?

Please help guys!

How much RAM is installed? And I assume the rated timings and voltage at 800MHz are 9-9-9-27 at 1.65V?

I have this type of ram. A 2*4Ghz kit.

"Each module kit has been tested to run at DDR3-1600MHz at a low latency timing of 9-9-9-27 at 1.65V. The SPDs are programmed to JEDEC standard latency DDR3 1333MHz timing of 9-9-9 at 1.5V."

CAS Latency
- 9-9-9-27
Capacity
- 4GB (2GB x2)
Speed
- DDR3-1600 (PC3 12800)
Test Voltage
- 1.65 Volts

But its not working for me

I won't go over the settings you posted for each of your attempts, but just looking at the settings for the 4.5GHz clock you posted...

For a 4.5GHz clock you'll probably need more along the lines of 1.35-1.40V Vcore. Change VCCSA back to Auto, LLC to Level 4, QPI/Vtt to 1.18V, DRAM voltage to 1.66V... these settings w/ SPD (DRAM multiplier) set to x16 at a 100 BCLK.

Thank you for your advice. However there are few things that are not clear for me. (forgive me i am a noob in this)

I tried what you suggested:

PIC1
PIC2
PIC3

But in LLC options, i only have auto, disabled, or enabled:LLC
And i was unable to find VCCSA setting, where can i find it, or does it have other names?

The effect was that first time the computer didnt boot and it set back the ram to 1333, after that booted up with 4.5Ghz with 1333, but got BSOD on loading screen. Then constant BSOD-s until i lowered it to default 3.4Ghz.

Thank you for your help.

VCCSA = System Agent Voltage

Ty, but still not working. Any voltage setting will cause BSOD for me, i ran memory diagnostics and checkdisk but both fine.

So now I am using it on default voltages and was able to get 4.0Ghz. on 1.24V stable. RAM is at 1333, any change will cause boot failure. I am really lost, i dont know what else can i do. My power supply is fine, mobo fine, cpu fine so I'm thinking about buying other brand RAM, maybe i have compatibility issues.
Ty for your help so far.

Try loosening the CAS Latency from 9 to 10 (10-9-9-27) and bumping the DRAM voltage to 1.67-1.68V, these w/ the rest of the settings left as-is including VCCSA.

memtest 86 time before you keep going something's screwy.
Using an aftermarket CPU cooler?

Full listout pls
case
board
cpu batch no if you have it
RAM " and stock timings and brand
PSU brand model

From what I gathered from your post, it Bsod'd every time you had any kind of OC on the RAM. Try placing another kit in(if you have one) and repeat overclocking.

Thank you for the replies. I made a full report with aida,
but here is a short list:
Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3-B3
Kingston HyperX XMP Genesis 1600Mhz Stock timings: 8-8-8-22 30 1.5v, XMP 1600 profile: 9-9-9-27 36 1.65v <-not working
CPU batch: L103A822
PSU: Corsair VX550W
Cooler: HyperTX3

redduc900 - thank you i will try these settings
Suppressor1137 - sadly i dont have another kit right now

I think that ANY voltage change will cause boot failure or BSOD. Now it is running on 4Ghz on stock voltages, i just changed the multiplier to 40, nothing else.

Odds are your memory just doesn't overclock well. I've had the same issues before, and I simply just couldn't OC my RAM.

And how did you solve it? New rams?

I'm actually using the same RAM. I just can't change the timings. I was able to overclock the core speed, but trying to lower the timings manually OR automatically (with memory bandwidth booster) resulted in the system refusing to boot.

Windows still won't boot even at 10-9-9-27 and 1.67-1.68V DRAM voltage, but yet Memtest passes? Try upping the QPI/Vtt to 1.2V, and setting VCCSA back to 1.12-1.13V, Performance Enhance set to Normal, LLC set to Auto, Command Rate set to 2T, and Channel and Rank Interleaving set to Enabled .

I did not run the memtest 86 yet, only the windows memory diagnostics. I am working today so I'll run the tests tomorrow, try the settings you adviced, and post the results here.

But just to be clear: raising the CPU Vcore levels cause boot failure too. Its strange, because
if i set to 40*100 and Vcore to 1.300V (tried everything between 1,3 and 1,4) = boot fails, but
if i set to 40*100 and Vcore to auto = boot and windows OK (except the ram 1600mhz settings ofc).

You shouldn't need to supply more than about 1.2-1.23V Vcore for a 4.0GHz clock.

If you want a quick and dirty OC that SHOULD work.. Try 4.2ghz (42 multi) and 1.25v. This worked for my two friends I recently built systems for for a 2600K. And neither have complained of any issues or BSOD's in the last 2-3 months (one was built a month before the other). I only ran 10 passes of IBT at Max for both to test stability due to a lack of time; and figured I'd let them just use the computer to test stability from there on. And so far no issues at all. (I showed them how to revert the OC as well before I left).

So if you want a simple quick OC try 1.25v and a 42 multi.

Don't forget to turn off C-states and all that.

Also just try to set your RAM to all it's rated timings. BUT just for this attempt; lower the multi so you get 1333 mhz instead of 1600.. Just curious to see how this goes.

x45 1.3v, bring it down until it errors in test. I can get it down to 1.285 at 4.5 ghz without an issue with p95 running for 7 hours, temps don't exceed 60c, which is where it was at stock with stock cooler. I'm happy XD.

Any lower on voltage and core#3 likes to experience hardware failure. :/
