Ok, this post is to chronicle my hatred for installing Windows 8, why...
Basically a log file that I can keep track of what worked and what didn't...
1st time I did an upgrade and it keep everything, ate almost my entire 120GB SSD my mistake.
2nd time did an upgrade because I thought I had too (bought win8 pro upgrade), selected clean install, FAILED, kept entire old system and some files
3rd time, erased SSD did a full clean install, WIN8 installed crashed had to restart, Win8 blew up and took all but 30GB of space
But it was working so I gave up and left it for a while...
4th time (today), did a clean install, no issues at all, only took 26 GB off space with NO size tweaking, I started updates and then it went downhill...
- Update attempt 1: FAILED; "Failure configuring windows update reverting changes"
- Update attempt 2: FAILED; crash blue screen : (
"Failure configuring windows update reverting changes"
- Update attempt 3: start installing updates individually
All went well until I hit the section: Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems
Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2756872) - FAILED
Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2768703) - FAILED

Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2811660) - OK
Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2812822) - OK
No drivers had been installed yet, no anti-virus, no overclock, I did not have this problem previously installing windows. Found 1 missing driver "Intel Smart Connect Technology Device", installed, but did not help.
Now its off to google search for ideas
Ok, might have found it, apparently it is not activated...even though it accepted the code during the install period and I can't activate it because it is an upgrade, even though it worked fine with the last clean install
Error Code: 0xC004F01
Description: The Software Licensing Service determined that this specific product key can be used for upgrading, not for clean installations.
So now it looks like I get to install WIN7 and the WIN8 again...
I'm guessing the crash on the 3rd install must have faked the activation out, in that it thought there was already a version of WIN8 installed...
5th install attempt, WIN8 is already installed to I am trying a clean install on top of WIN8 to see if that will satisfy the upgrade requirement, in did accept the code first shot so maybe...
- Install took 26.1 GB and activation was successful
- Round 1 & 2 of updates successful, 35.3 GB used, now to trim WIN8 down
Finally success
So the moral of this is WIN8 installer is not perfect and with WIN8 Pro upgrade, you need to have a prior system installed, if WIN8 is NOT activated the updates will FAIL.
