Too much effort for me. I'd rather get an old mower or other engine and belt an alternator to it. That would be enough to charge batteries for sure! I know, since I used a setup the same to weld with using an alternator. ;)

I've made a few in the past and they were so well liked people usually talked me into selling them. LOL

I also have 2 alternators. One for the lamina engine and one for....... ;)

Though I doubt my dad would like the idea of me building a welder! :p
 
I've done it a few times. Really, any alternator will work as long as it can produce enough amperage, though one wire units are the easiest since they self excite. Sometimes I don't even bother pulling the voltage regulator.
