Yes you lose all your files. You lose everything on your harddisk. Thats why I will not run less then 2 harddrives in my system. That way I can back everything up quickly and reformat, reinstall and I'm ready to go.
All you need to do is get to a pure dos enviroment (meaning not the dos in windows). At the dos prompt type "format c:" and hit enter. then follow the instructions. It usually takes around 10 minutes or so depending on the size of your harddrive. One thing though if your running WinME you will need a win98 bootup floppy disk to get to a dos prompt. Which sucks. With win98 all you needed to do was hit the F8 key during bootup to bring up a bootup menue. Winme does not have this option.
