*sigh*

Fools and poor reporting don't mix well

MS is NOT forcing SP2 on you. The ONLY thing they are doing is taking away the tool that keeps it off Automatic Updates.

So the very simple solution...and something you should probably be doing anyway...is don't use Automatic Updates!!!

Either way...I've had no issues with SP2 on many systems. Any claims that it is slower are unfounded and false.

SP2 is actually quite good. I've found it to be VERY stable and VERY fast. If ya don't like the firewall/protection center, you can turn it off with a quick Start-Run-services.msc

The only time i found SP2 to be unstable was installing it seperately from a clean install. I mean, instead of slipstreaming it into the WinXP CD, installing it straight up onto a non SP2 machine.

I heard that you just wouldn't be able to do future updates if you did not get sp2. That was my understanding.

In response to requests from businesses, Microsoft last year released a tool that allowed companies to continue using the automatic update feature but temporarily block the security-oriented update from downloading...

...Microsoft first released the SP2-blocking tool in August, saying it would allow customers to put off the upgrade for 120 days. In September, Microsoft said it would double the length of time, to 240 days, to give businesses more time to test the software...

...The move affects only those who use Windows' automatic update to connect directly to Microsoft servers. Some businesses have reconfigured the automatic update feature to connect to their own corporate update servers. Those companies can continue to push out updates to their own schedule.

if you really want to be sure that you never get sp2, install linux on another partition and use lilo as the boot program. no service pack will install if the boot program isn't from microsoft. gotta love linux, it even makes windows better

KfistoRok & Tollhousefrank - The WU site says "Windows XP users: new security updates are now available for SP1 and SP2 only".

I took that to mean that you must have at least SP1 to get updates.

First thing I do after I install SP2, byebye security center. Otherwise its fast, stable, and zero issue. Hell I don't think I've even crashed XP since I upgraded to SP2 on both my systems.

What does that have to do with anything? SP2 installed just fine on my dual-boot. The boot loader goes on the MBR (master boot record) of the harddrive. AFAIK The windows boot loader (NTLDR) is initiated by the boot sector of the windows partition.(bios executes the boot program on the MBR > which exeuctes the boot sector of the selected partition>which loads the program that starts the windows XP/2000 starup routine (NTLDR).

try having dual boot with no service pack at all, then upgrade to sp1. it wont work.

I hate SP2. It takes way too long to load. I reformated the comp and it is on sp1 now. Windows 2000 pro is cool too untill I install all the service and security packs that make it slower than a geriatric turtle race.

Odd... all my windows XP SP2 installs went without a single hitch... some were slipstreamed while others were patched. My only pet peeve is the security center (its annoying little security 'warnings' ), but with a few registry hacks, I don't have any problems.

Thats why you may want to upgrade to win2k since M$ is now forcing winxp owners to get sp2 and this clashes with a64s
