when installing an ssd into laptop do i need to do something special?

i just plugged it in directly into the gold thing on the laptop... no cables is this the right way to do it? i ask because im not sure if im getting the speeds of my sata 2 ssd.

Run a test against it (ATTO) and see if you reach the rated speed of the drive.
