How does this work. do you need a special burner or CD or both? i googled it and burners came up but i didn't know if that was a sales gimmick
 
You need special media and a special burner. It is neat to have, but it only scribes in black, and the discs are a greenish color. They look retarted.
 
You need a burner that supports LightSribe and you do need to buy special disks.

The color of the disks depend on the manufacturer. Philips has some gold color disks.

It prints in grayscale not just black and white.

The trick to it is to burn the image twice as it helps improve contrast.
