I'm doing an economics report on the the effect of the Thailand floods on HDD prices. Looking up current prizes is easy, but I don't really know where I would find the pre-flood prices. Simply put, if you know what pre-flood price you paid for your HDD, just post here! :)

I got some Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C drives (1TB) For about £40 ($63 USD) each around xmas time 2010.

The exact same disk from the same website is now: £79.99 ($126 USD)

Check out the Newegg price history on the Samsung F3 1TB drive. It's INSANE!!!

The sad thing is that even though the manufacturing is finally picking up speed, the price gouging won't end anytime in the near future.

I'm sure you are correct.. My drive is currently dying so they will remain high till i buy one, then plummet a week later.

1TB 7200RPM Samsung drive was $59, 1.5TB 5400RPM was $89 and I think the 2TB 5400RPM was $119 through UMart Online...... I know as I only ever bother buying Samsung drives. Fast, quiet and reliable..... Why oh why did Seagate have to buy Samsungs HDD division..... Damnit!

It's weird how some computer parts we get cheaper here in Australia than the US, and then other parts (CPU's and mainboards mostly) cost more here than the US....

Just to elaborate on that.. A lot of the top companies like Dell for example are going to be high on the priority list for the new drives, not the people who are going to pay less and take smaller quantities. It'll take a while until the biggest companies are content, then supply will catch up on the lower end.
