White Label on Black Drive - WTF?

I just purchased a new NAS and decided to just reuse two WD Blue 10EALS drives previously installed in an older NAS. Due to problems setting up the new NAS, I discovered both drives had bad sectors. Subsequent testing using Western Digital's Lifeguard Quick and Extended tests verified both drives were bad. Both drives were just replaced by WD under warranty.

The first replacement drive I received from WD is an almost identical blue drive (EALS replaced with EALX). It tested sat (WD Lifeguard extended).

WD sent a WD1001FALS as a replacement for the second drive. Although FALS drives are Black drives, the label is all white. It also does not have "WD Caviar Black" with the globe logo printed at the bottom of the label. Why is the label all white and slightly different than the labels on the other black drives I have? It has a July 20, 2012 date on it so it appears to be a new (maybe refurbished) drive.

Worse, this drive failed both the WD Lifeguard Quick and Extended tests so I am trying to understand exactly what they shipped before I call WD to replace the replacement.

Prob a refurb, but generally speaking it sounds like an odd situation. As long as it has a serial etc RMA again!

I would just use the model number as reference to what the drive you have. So WD1001FALS is a Black drive regardless of what the label looks like.

Exactly... Go by S/N, not the color of the sticker.
