Hi all ,only just found this excellent forum.
I would like some advice on upgrading my old system-

Q6600 @ 3.6GHZ
Biostar TP-I45
OCZ Platinum 1066mhz 4 gig
ATI HD5870 1 gig
Antec gamer 620w
Antec 900 v2

I only have a £300 budget for cpu/memory/motherboard (will be upgrading gfx card at later date, mind set on r9 280x). I have been looking at the FX6300, Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0,AMD Gamer 8GB (2x4GB) PC3-14900C9 1866MHz. Whats your opinions on this spec?
Would it be a decent upgrade on what i have atm?

Thanks.

your about in the ballpark, move up to the 6350.
what do you have for a psu?

no i see it, that'll do.

what cooler?

Heatsink i was thinking this-Raijintek Themis Evo
Is it worth paying the extra £20 for the 6350? as i will be overclocking the 6300

the 6350 IS a better processor, they are speced tigher.
a 4300 is a 6300 that failed spec, a 6300 is a 6350 that failed spec.

In that case then do you think i would be better off with the 8320 as its only £10 more than the 6350?

the issue with that is cooling, you can idle 2 cores and run it as a six core but, you still add a bit more heat as 2 cores are drawing idle juice, with a noctua cooler with two fans you can do it.
it looks like the one you chose only mounts one and is on the noisy side, which is a no no in my book.

you will need ram with no, or very low heat spreaders either way you go.

going back and looking at some results and posts the 6350 will be plenty and can even be trimmed to four cores for gaming as 4 cores is about all they can use right now.

The six core FX CPU will be better suited to your motherboard than the FX-8320 because of less power draw.

Look at the Thermaltake Frio OCK for a cooler. It's as good as the Noctua NH D14 but less expensive.

Say i get fx6350 and one of the mentioned heatsinks overclocked to around 4.4ghz, do you think it is a decent/worthy upgrade over a q6600 at 3.6ghz purely from a gaming point?
thanks.

CPU World attempts to compare just about any cpu to another. There are other sites that try to do the same also.

It appears in some things you should see about a 50% real world boost in performance. In some other scenarios there seems more like a 15% boost in performance in applications. Upgrading is up to you but it seems you will get a boost from the upgrade.

I have the 6350 and love it as of now. I have it overclocked to 4.6 right now on a hyper 212 evo cooler and handles it all day. I am not a hardcore gamer or anything like that but so far every game I have thrown at it hasn't actually stressed it one bit. I could possibly go to 4.7 with how it is now and not wory about my temps for everyday gaming and things of that nature and not have to worry about getting up to the 60 centigrade. Not sure how it is against the q6600 but if you are looking for a solid budget processor the 6350 is a great start.

I have been searching trying to find some more direct benchmarking between the two but can not seem to find any, its just that the q6600 has served me well for the last 5 yrs. i am a bit worried that the fx6350 wont serve me nearly as long. Spare cash for an upgrade never comes around very often.

There are comparisons...

...just have to look pretty hard now for valid comparison since the Q6600 is now so old. These Passmarks are all done under the older V7 test so they are on a level playing field against the test software.
