Why was the MSI R9 290 so close in benchmarks to this dual GPU
behemoth?

I'm really surprised the peak power consumption was so low.

I thought the X2 denoted a dual GPU card. That explains everything.

I was thinking it was like the 4870x2.

I thought it might be a 290 version of the 295x2 at first as well
but after reading the rest of the article and also seeing the pcb pictures their are no 2 gpus on this card.
